Saudi Arabia restores Nigeria’s Hajj quota to 95,000

Nigeria’s slot for the 2017 Hajj has been restored to 95,000 by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

This declaration was made by the Saudi Minister of Hajj during a Ministerial Meeting between officials from the two countries on Wednesday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The Kingdom had in 2013 reduced Nigeria’s quota from 95,000 to 76,000. It said the cut, which affected all countries participating in the annual ritual, was necessitated by development projects going on in the Grand Mosque and other holy sites in the Kingdom. Read more

Angry Women, youths besiege EFCC, demands Arrest of Fayose over Arms Deal

Angry women and youths yesterday besieged the headquarters of the Economic and Financial crimes commission, EFCC to demand the immediate probe and prosecution of the Ekiti state Governor, Ayodele Fayose over his involvement in the arms probe deal.

The group said although the Governor enjoys immunity,such is not as sacred ad human lives.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi, has commenced moves to lure two prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the party.

Alhaji Sani Hukuma, a chieftain of the APC, and chairman, Kebbi State APC elders’ forum, made the disclosure on Friday in Birnin Kebbi while addressing newsmen. Killer Cop sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for Killing Banker

Justice Silvanus C. Oriji of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court sitting at Apo, Abuja has sentenced a police of­ficer, Olotu Owoicho, to twelve years imprison­ment for causing the death of one Mrs. Doris Nonye Okere.

The verdict which is coming six years after the killing of late Mrs. Okere that was hit by a bullet re­leased from an AK47 rifle in the hands of Owoicho, a police officer attached to the Police Headquarters, but posted to the Mpape branch of Zenith Bank PLC, a suburb of Abuja. Read more

FG extends deadline for airlines’ automated payment

The Federal Government has extended the deadline given to airlines operating in the country to automate their remittance/payment systems to aviation agencies to Feb. 28

MTN may list in Nigeria only in 2018 as it tackles claim of corruption

MTN may put off plans to list its Nigerian operation until 2018 as Africa’s largest wireless carrier works to resolve a regulatory dispute and awaits an economic recovery in the continent’s most populous country.

“It’s a work in progress and hopefully within the 12 to 18 month period we will be able to do it,’’ MTN chairman and acting CEO Phuthuma Nhleko said at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “Regulatory issues need to be resolved, and the macro conditions need to have improved.” Read more

Six people found alive in hotel two days after avalanche in Italy

Rescue crews are believed to be in contact with the survivors, who are still trapped under the rubble. The avalanche that hit an Italian mountain hotel almost two days ago and rescuers are working to free them from the snow, fire brigade spokesman Luca Cari said.

Deaths from Nigerian refugee camp air strike rises to 90, could reach 170: MSF

The death toll from an accidental Nigerian air strike on a refugee camp in the town of Rann has risen to around 90 people, and could be as high as 170, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said in a statement on Friday.

Tuesday’s strike on the northeastern town in Borno state, which had Boko Haram militants as its target, has led to an investigation by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). The inquiry’s report is due to be submitted no later than Feb. 2. The aid group, also known as Doctors Without Borders, said the higher figure of 170 comes from reports from residents and community leaders. Read more
