Court sets date for Ifeanyi Ubah’s right application ruling

A Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed May 25 to rule on whether it has jurisdiction in hearing the suit involving the Chairman, Capital Oil and Gas Limited, Ifeanyi Ubah, and the State Security Service alongside others.

Justice Idris Mohammed adjourned the matter after hearing counter affidavits filed by counsel to the 4th and 5th respondents, Peter Okeremodu, and applications from counsel to the 7th and 8th respondents, Kabiru Turaki. Read more

EU bars Med-View airlines from its airspace over safety concerns

The European Commission has barred Nigerian airline, Med-View Airlines from operating within its airspace over safety reasons.

The airline was one of those under the EU Air Safety List Annex A which includes all airlines banned from operating in Europe. Read more

NSCDC Nabs Candidate With Gun At JAMB Centre In Nasarawa State

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Nasarawa State has arrested a 21-year-old suspected candidate  for being in possession of firearms in one of the centres of the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in the state.

Mr Bashir Lawal-Kano, the state commandant of the NSCDC, told newsmen in Lafia on Thursday that the suspect was arrested at the Nasarawa State Polytechnic centre during a search at the entrance to the hall. Read more

Kaduna Govt at war with banks over fees

The Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service (KDIRS) has threatened to seal all banks operating in the state which failed to pay its communication mast and Signage fees as required by law. Legal Adviser to KDIRS Francis Kozah in Kaduna on Thursday said that the defaulting banks were given two weeks to pay or be sealed. Kozah explained that the Kaduna State Tax Codification and Consolidation Law 2016 provided that all bank branches operating in the state with communication mast and synergy were to pay certain fees. Federal government has approved the procurement of 12 intervention vessels and 3 helicopters for the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to fight piracy and other illegal activities on the country’s territorial waters. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has arraigned the Chief Executive Officer, General Duties and Procurement Officer Kaduna State Polytechnic, Mr. Ahmed Umar, for alleged contract inflation and award of contracts to a company which he owned. Nollywood actress, Moji Olaiya dies

Nollywood star actress Moji Olaiya has been reported dead. She was 42 years old. Multiple sources said she died of heart attack in Canada, where she gave birth to a baby girl in March. The baby was her second child. Her first daughter is 18 years old. The beautiful actress, who had featured in many Yoruba and English movies married her second husband last year after the first one crashed in 2008.

Mixed martial arts champion, McGregor, signs deal for Mayweather fight

Fight promoter Dana White says he has an agreement with mixed martial arts champion Conor McGregor for a proposed megafight, but boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather remains unsigned.

White told American television cable channel TNT on Wednesday night that McGregor has agreed to a boxing match and not a martial arts fight which heavily favours Mayweather, who has never lost in his two-decades-long storied career.

White said they still have a long way to go. But his plan now is to try to lure Mayweather out retirement for a super fight with McGregor. Read more

Police arrest students for impersonating customs officers on social media

The Intelligence Response Team of the Inspector-General of Police has arrested three students and one other person, who allegedly posed on Facebook as customs officers auctioning cars.

The Leader of the IRT, ACP Abba Kyari, confirmed the arrest in Lagos on Thursday.

He said that two of the students were from the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, and one from the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, both in Edo. Read more

Nigeria to launch new nanosatellite in May

A new nanosatellite by Nigeria will be launched before the end of May, an official said in New York on Thursday.

The Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency, Prof. Seidu Mohammed, said the launch would be in conjunction with Japan, Ghana, Bangladesh and Nepal. Nanosatellite is applied to an artificial satellite with a wet mass between 1 and 10 kg. Read more

UN court orders Pakistan not to execute Indian ‘spy’

A top UN court has ordered Pakistan not to execute a former Indian navy officer convicted on charges of spying until it has had time to hear a case brought by India.

India has argued in The International Court of Justice that Pakistan violated international laws by not allowing it access to Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav.

Police investigating baby deaths at Countess of Chester hospital

Cheshire police have launched an investigation into an unusually high rate of baby deaths and collapses at the Countess of Chester hospital between June 2015 and June 2016.

Det Ch Supt Nigel Wenham said the foundation trust had contacted police this month regarding neonatal services at the hospital and that the force would examine the deaths of 15 babies and the collapses of six. Read more
