One of the 62 miscreants detained during a raid by the Lagos State Task Force at Oshodi during the weekend explained they paid N100 every day to their leader in exchange for a space to sleep under the Oshodi bridge.
Another of the miscreants who gave his name as Gbenga Ololade said he came from Ibadan and has been sleeping under the bridge for three years. He also told our source he was initiated into cultism with a particular face tattoo by their group leader.
The Chairman of the Task Force, Yinka Egbeyemi, explained the efforts are part of ongoing efforts to rid Oshodi and its environs of criminal elements adding it was carried out with the approval of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, who raised concern about the increasing rate of criminality in the state.
He said: “Many of them have different tattoos on their arms indicating they belong to a particular sect or cult. Others chain smokers among them rob residents and pedestrians of their valuables such as phones, wallets and pieces of jewellery, early morning and late at night”.
The Chairman added that the suspects were screened, during which the minors, who were between 12 and 17 years, were referred to the juvenile homes for rehabilitation.
Informing that the suspects had been charged to court on the directive of Edgal, Egbeyemi hinted that after the completion of all ongoing projects by Lagos State government around Oshodi, there would no longer be any hideout for criminals to unleash terror on innocent members of the public again.
