“Truth searches for no one. It waits to be found.”
The aforementioned quote is from Suzy Kassem’s seminal work, “Rise Up and Salute the Sun: The Writings of Suzy Kassem” which is a body of work that dissects issues humankind confronts every day especially regarding the battle within the soul between being truthful to your cause and being delusional in order to ignore it.
Of course, we are all in the pursuit of happiness and everyone attains this state of mind through various means.
Some look for it in others. Some, in material things. Others, in actions. However, you choose, searching inside, and speaking your truth is the first step.
And this search is extremely crucial towards finding one’s self and if you are lucky enough, it will come out on its own volition but for a majority of humankind, it is often a journey.
If we are not first truthful with ourselves, how can we expect to be truthful and genuine with others?
In Stoicism, we find that the central tenets are, removing the negative influences from our lives (grief, anger, and anxiety) and allowing our lives to be filled with joy, but not without accepting that it can be taken from us at any time.
In fact, according to Seneca, if you choose to practice Stoicism, you will have to make it your business to “learn how to feel joy”.
And how will you know if you’re truly feeling joy; if you’ve truly removed negative influences from your life; if you’re truly living a good life; if you’re not first truthful with yourself?
Anyone who has looked within, reflected on themselves, can tell you, truth-seeking is not an easy business. It will piss you off, at first.
You may find things hidden away, things buried within the recesses of your memory you don’t want to face.
However, in order to move past them, you have to set them free. But the more you do it, the easier it gets.
Coupling this with Stoicism according to research helps with the search for inner truth, along with the tranquillity, meditation, and joy that makes it a journey of self-discovery, instead of a journey of “beating yourself up”.
Keeping a journal or a private social media account helps tremendously. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but if you choose to go big, get something fabulous!
Make a commitment to pen your thoughts daily, even if it’s just a couple of sentences. This will be a tool for you to reflect on later and see just how far you’ve come in your journey to better self-awareness and happiness.
Fancy cars, big homes, and wealth can only take us so far. It has been said that we can’t take it with us, this is true.
Why not enjoy what we have, while we are here? Why not do what we were programmed to do, as humans, and look within ourselves, find our truth, and live a good life.
