The General Officer Commanding, 7 Division, Nigerian Army, Maj.- Gen. Ahmadu Mohammed yesterday escaped death by a whisker in Maiduguri as disgruntled soldiers opened fire on his official vehicle.
The GOC had come to the Maimalari Military Barracks in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital to address the soldiers. There were conflicting reports from sources at the barracks located on the Maiduguri- Baga road as to the cause of the mutiny.
A source said the problem started after some troops went to Chibok Local Government Area for an operation, on their way back to Maiduguri, realised that the road was not safe, as darkness has set in, and therefore requested the GOC to allow them spend the night in one of the villages considered to be safe, but the GOC insisted that they must come back the same night and report to Maiduguri.
Over 200 schoolgirls were abducted by suspected Book Haram terrorists at the Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, on April 14.
