The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi, says the Pa Oruta Ngele Stadium Abakaliki remains the official venue for its mega rally on Saturday. The chairman of APC in the state, Chief Eze Nwachukwu, made this known at a press briefing on Friday in Abakaliki, in reaction to media reports that the state government has denied the party access to the stadium. The Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Dave Umahi, Mr Emma Uzor on Thursday while hosting members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), said that the stadium would not be used by APC for its rally due to ongoing renovation works. Olusola asks tribunal to declare him winner (Punch)

The candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, has filed a petition against the electoral victory of the All Progressives Congress candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi. The Independent National Electoral Commission has since declared Fayemi as the winner of the election. In the over 700-page petition filed on Friday, Olusola asked the Ekiti Governorship Election Petition Tribunal to declare him as the winner of the election “having scored the majority of lawful votes”. EFCC invites ex-JAMB directors as panel uncovers N8bn fraud (Punch)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is set to invite a current director and an ex-director of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board for alleged fraud. This is just as the panel set up by the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, to probe JAMB discovered that the examination body failed to remit revenues in excess of N8bn to the Federal Government between 2010 and 2015. The amount includes unremitted Value Added Tax and Withholding Tax.The investigation was sequel to the remittance of N7.8bn to the Federal Government by JAMB led by Prof. Ishaq Oloyede. Read more

SON Begins Nationwide Evacuation of Unfortified Food Products (Vanguard)

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has commenced a nationwide evacuation of unfortified food products in the country. The Director General, SON, Osita Aboloma said it is in line with both the present administration and international organisation’s food fortification programme at ensuring that Nigerian children and women have access to basic nutrients and vitamins for health and development. Ebola cases in DR Congo ‘will rise in coming days’ – WHO (PremiumTimes)

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised the alarm that cases from the resurgent Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are expected to rise in the coming days. WHO’s Deputy Director General of Emergency Preparedness and Response, Peter Salama, said in Geneva that there had been around 20 deaths as a result of the Ebola virus. Mr Salama also said protecting vulnerable people in eastern DRC from the latest Ebola Virus outbreak was going to be “very, very complex”, given the huge logistical challenges and ongoing conflict there. Air Force kills Zamfara bandits in air attack (Vanguard)

The Nigerian Air Force, Friday, said its newly deployed combat aircraft in Zamfara State have recorded huge success  by killing several armed bandits   in the state in the last three days. The new Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, in a statement, said the aircraft deployed in the Operation Diran Mikiya,neutralized several armed bandits during air attacks near Mashema Village and at another location 4km Southeast of Yanmari, both in Zamfara State. The statement said:”On 1 August 2018, ground troops, while on clearance operations near Mashema, came in contact with a group of armed bandits at a location West of Mashema Village and therefore requested for air support. Flood kills 1 person, destroys 40 houses in Kano state (Guardian)

A heavy rainfall on Thursday claimed the life of one person and destroyed over 40 houses in Dambatta local government area of Kano state. The down pour which started around 4:00 p.m and lasted for four hours, also destroyed properties worth millions of Naira. Turkey’s president says the country will freeze the assets of two United States officials in retaliation for sanctions against Turkey’s justice and interior ministers over the detention of an American pastor. Pregnant woman gang-raped by eight men who locked her husband in van (Metro)

A heavily pregnant woman has allegedly been gang-raped by eight men who had tied up and locked her husband in a van. The 20-year-old, who is said to be around eight months pregnant, had travelled to Tasgoan with her hotelier husband in search of workers for their hotel. One of the alleged attackers reportedly told the husband that he knew of someone who would take the job, but he should bring 20,00 rupees (£225) to the person as an advance payment. But when they couple arrived for the meeting, four men tied the husband up and locked him in a van while another four men took the women into a nearby room and raped her. Read more
