The Health Minister, Isaac Adewole, has opened the lid on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) fiasco saying the Federal Government is taking appropriate steps to restore peace.
The NHIS was thrown into the crisis on Monday when the Executive Secretary, Usman Yusuf, ignored his indefinite suspension by the governing council of the agency.
The suspension of the executive was declared by the council on Thursday in order to allow the council to investigate allegations of misconduct and fraud against him.
But Yusuf returned to the headquarters of NHIS in Abuja in order to force his way into the office with a retinue of 50 police officers.
Adewole explained he was yet to be informed about the development, “I have not been properly briefed on the development at the NHIS. I have called for a meeting and once I get full details of what is happening, I will send my report to the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
“I can only assure you that government will take appropriate steps to restore peace in NHIS and ensure that the scheme fulfils its mandate”.
The Health Minister has also been at loggerheads with Yusuf over the running of the NHIS.
