Despite criticism in some quarters over the inclusion of Odion Ighlo in the 28 players invited to prosecute the country’s September 7 Africa Cup of Nations’ qualifier against Seychelles in Victoria, Head Coach Gernot Rohr, has appeared unperturbed. The German tactician has rather stuck  to his decision as the national team gets set to open its camp in Abuja before jetting out for  the September 7, away clash. He noted that though Ighalo who last scored for the Eagles a year ago against Cameroon in Uyo, missed begging chances against Argentina in Russia which failed to impress some of the fans, he nonetheless deserves another opportunity to make amends. Bolt to play 1st game for Australian club in quest to go pro (Usatoday)

Usain Bolt will make his debut for the Central Coast Mariners in an Australian A-League pre-season exhibition game against an amateur team. The eight-time Olympic sprinting gold medalist from Jamaica is on trial with the Mariners, hoping to win a professional contract. He has been practicing this week on the left wing and expects to play about 15 to 20 minutes in that position during Friday’s exhibition match. Club officials are predicting a crowd of 12,000 for the home game in Gosford, north of Sydney. Bolt, who is at home on a much larger stage, expected to be nervous on his debut. “There definitely will be nerves, it’s not like it’s a charity game anymore,” Bolt said. “I expect to make mistakes but I also expect to go out there, make myself proud and to push myself. PDP begins sale of nomination forms (Guardian)

The People’s Democratic Party announced that it has commenced the sale of Expression of Interests and Nomination Forms for the 2019 general elections. The expression of interest and nomination form for the presidential category was put at N2,000,000 and N10,000,000 respectively, totaling N12 million for an aspirant. For the governorship category, nomination and expression of interest accumulated to N6 million while the Senate forms summed to N3.5 million. House of Representatives and House of Assembly categories are for N1.5 million and N600,000 respectively while National delegates and ad-hoc delegates are to pay N20,000 and N5,000 respectively. 2019: Abia Guber aspirant assures Buhari of 1m votes (NTA)

A Governorship aspirant for the 2019 election in Abia state, Amb. Vincent Ubani has assured President Muhammadu Buhari of one million votes from Abia state youths in the General Election. Ubani, a youth aspirant, told newsmen in an interview that Abia youths had resolved to deliver the one million votes as part of the strategy by the youths to take over power and actualise Igbo Presidency by 2023. Ubani who spoke after signing a pact with the Nigeria Youth Corporate Social Responsibility Trust Fund (NYCSRF), Nigeria Youth Congress (NYC), National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and Nigeria Youth Parliament to promote youth candidacy in 2019 and total take over in 2023. Buhari sympathises with Kebbi flood victims (Punch)

President Muhammadu Buhari has sympathised with the government and people of Kebbi State on the flood disaster that ravaged 11 local government areas of the state. The Chief Press Secretary to Kebbi Governor, Abubakar Dakingari made the disclosure in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday. He said the president’s message was read to the affected Koko, Koko/Besse Local Government Area of the state by Governor Atiku Bagudu while addressing victims. Boko Haram fuelled by shrinking Lake Chad – UN deputy chief (PremiumTimes)

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed has attributed the Boko Haram terrorism in Northeast Nigeria largely to the drying up of the once thriving Lake Chad, which provided millions with livelihood. Community leaders in Aghoro, Ekeremor Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, yesterday accused the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Delta Safe (ODS), of intimidation. The leaders said their representatives in the panel investigating an oil spill in their community were being coerced by JTF to sign a report in favour of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC). It was gathered JTF’s alleged meddlesomeness stalled release of the Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) report of the incident, which occurred from the Trans Ramos Pipeline within Shell’s oilfield at Aghoro communities. Navy to Court Martial 3 Personnel over theft of Tompolo’s Equipment (ThisDay)

The Nigerian Navy has set up a court martial to try three naval personnel allegedly involved in the theft of some equipment from a ship yard owned by ex-militant leader, Chief Government Ekpomukpolo alias “Tompolo”. Outgoing Flag Officer Commanding, Central Naval Command (FOC) Central Naval Command Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Rear Admiral Saleh Usman made the disclosure yesterday at the end of  farewell parade organised by the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS Delta), Warri, Delta State. Taraba residents raise the alarm over collapsed bridges, bad road (Punch)

Residents and commuters plying the Jalingo-Wukari Expressway on Monday called on the Federal Government to urgently commence repair work on the collapse bridges and bad spots on expressway. The residents and motorists, who lamented the hardship facing them following the collapse of bridges and the poor state of the road, added that the repair would avert tragedy when another heavy rain fall. Police arrest 57 suspected gays in Lagos (Punch)

No fewer than 57 suspected gays have been arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly gathering to conduct initiation rites in the state. The initiation reportedly took place around 1am on Sunday, August 26, 2018, at a hotel in the Egbeda area of the state. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, said the arrest was based on intelligence from men of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps. Imohimi said on receipt of the information, the Divisional Police Officers of the Shasha and Idimu divisions, were ordered to investigate the claim that some youths would be initiated into a “gay/homosexual club.” Read more

Israeli fury as Arab MKs move against racist law (Memo)

A proposal by Arab members of the Knesset (parliament) to challenge Israel’s racist laws in cooperation with the Palestinian Authority at the UN has angered Israeli officials, Quds Press reported on Monday. According to Channel 2 TV, the Arab MKs and the PA ambassador to the UN are seeking a resolution against the latest Israeli law which emphasises Israel as a state only for the Jewish people. The law, they insist, establishes an “apartheid regime” in Israel. The MKs and ambassador have already met with UN officials. Senior Catholic priest calls for civil disobedience against PA (Memo)

Senior Roman Catholic priest Monsignor Manuel Musallam has called for resistance against the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli authorities in occupied Palestine and abroad, Shehab.ps reported on Monday. He called specifically for acts of civil disobedience in the occupied West Bank. The veteran activist and member of the Islamic-Christian Committee to Protect Holy Sites told Shehab that the Palestinian resistance should establish an army and announce obligatory service across Palestine and in the diaspora. All sides in Yemen conflict could be guilty of war crimes, says UN (CNN)

Parties fighting a brutal civil war in Yemen have conducted attacks that were “disproportionate” and could be considered war crimes, a United Nations panel of experts announced Tuesday. Their report, which comes after multiple recent civilian deaths, points to thousands of civilian casualties caused by Saudi-led coalition airstrikes, widespread arbitrary detention, torture, sexual violence and the conscription of children as young as 8 into Yemen’s armed forces, all of which are crimes under international law.
