Nigerian Breweries yesterday unveiled its World Cup campaign to members of the Nigerian press. Popular Super Sports analysts, Moses Praise and Colin Udoh, and radio personality, Tosyn Bucknor attended the event which held at BheerHugz café, Ikeja.
Speaking at the event, Marketing Director, Nigerian Breweries, Walter Drenth, encouraged Nigerians to support ‘Shine on Nigeria,’ Star lager’s new slogan, so it may become as recognizable as “the Mexican wave and other highly popular celebratory recitations.” Mr. Drenth also announced popular football stars Nwankwo Kanu and Austin Okocha as brand ambassadors thereby quashing rumours of singers P-Square snagging the spot.
The new advert shows a group of Nigerian fans celebrating a goal in a bar, while holding on to bottles and glasses of Star. As the celebrations dwindle, one fan says “I think that was the best goal ever.”
The camera then pans to the back of the bar where Nwankwo Kanu and Austin Okocha stand looking on. Okocha says, “You really think so?” The fans, surprised, turn to look at two of the country’s most iconic football stars.
“We’ve done better than that,” Okocha says to Kanu. And Kanu replies, “Yeah!”
The advert received generous applause from the audience. And later, speaking to sabinews on the campaign by Nigeria Breweries, Colin Udoh said, “For a brand we’ve always known, it is a good thing Star has shifted to football.”
The ad hits television stations in a few days.
