There is a groundswell of calls both online and offline on the EFCC to release popular Abuja based blogger, Abubakar Sidiq Usman who tweets with the handle @MrAbuSidiq.
@MrAbuSidiq was arrested according to a statement in The Punch credited to Mr. Wislon Uwujaren, EFCC spokesman, for offences bordering on cyberstalking, following a story which he published on his personal website abusidiqu.com.
In the story credited to Adenike Lucas and which ran on August 2, 2016 under the caption “EFCC Boss, Magu Commences Total War With Core EFCC Staff” the website alleged that the EFCC boss, whose appointment is yet to be confirmed by the Senate, is on a war path with staffers of the commission.
“Regular members of staff at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC are complaining that they are being bullied by the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu.
Magu, who returned a few seconded police men to their mother organisation has become panicky following series of revelations on his activities at the commission.
According to a source, Magu was “panicking because his confirmation had been deferred and is beginning to suspect any and every one in the commission for his problem.”
In June of this year, the DSS arrested one Air Commodore Umar Muhammed. Mr. Muhammed is still in detention with the state security service accused of carrying out a blackmailing cartel on behalf of senior staff at EFCC and Office of the National Security Adviser.”
@MrAbuSidiq was arrested on Monday August 8, 2016 and is being held by the EFCC even though The Punch quoted the EFCC spokesman as saying “the suspect has already been offered administrative bail and will be released to his elected sureties.”
Tweets went out this morning on his page via his handle @MrAbuSidiq but messages sent to him were not returned.
