Obasanjo: My decision not to back Atiku in National Interest (ThisDay)

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo poured cold water on the presidential ambition of former deputy, ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, saturday, refusing to back him in his quest to become president in 2019. Obasanjo stated that his refusal to support Atiku was in the national interest and was not personal. The former president restated his opposition to Atiku to THISDAY through his spokesman, Kehinde Akinyemi. It followed an inquiry about Obasanjo’s earlier remarks in an interview with Premium Times, an online publication, where he was quoted as saying that Atiku “can never enjoy” his support for any political office Read more

Saraki won’t resign, insist senators (SUN)

The senator representing Bauchi Central, Isa Hama Misau, and his Kwara South counterpart, Rafiu Ibrahim, have said that Senate President Bukola Saraki would not resign from the position when the Senate resumes on September 25. They warned senators elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) against fomenting trouble when the upper chamber resumes from recess, saying they would meet their match if they do so. ‘Service chiefs tired, need replacement’ (Punch)

An economic expert and socio-political analyst, Prof. Sebastine Uremadu, has hailed the recent shake-up in the Nigerian Army formations around the country. He described the development as a major step in the war against terrorism and general insecurity. He also said the service chiefs were tired and exhausted their strategies hence should be replaced with fresh officers. He spoke in Umuahia on Saturday while reacting to the recent redeployment across military commands and formations. Uremadu pointed out that the redeployment exercise was in tandem with his recent media works where he called for a total overhaul of the military commands and change in strategies. Read more

Former military President, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has thrown his weight behind Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, a presidential aspirant and immediate past Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). He gave his blessing at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Saturday when Senator Makarfi paid him a courtesy call. In his earlier address, Makarfi highlighted some of the challenges facing the country and the way to solve them. Boko Haram constructs buildings on Lake Chad, holds meetings — Military (Punch)

The Nigerian Air Force has said that its intelligence revealed that the Boko Haram terrorists erected buildings in the Daban Masara area on the Lake Chad in Borno State, holding regular meetings. The air force however said on Saturday that its Alpha Jet aircraft and an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance platform have bombed the two buildings sighted, and killed two terrorists sighted. Our correspondent learnt that the Alpha Jet was deployed by the Air Task Force of Operation Lafiya Dole on Friday when the terrorists were sighted holding a meeting in green-roofed buildings at Daban Masara area. Defectors will regret their actions, says Wamakko (Punch)

An All Progressives Congress Senator from Sokoto State, Aliyu Wamakko, staged a grand homecoming to Sokoto on Saturday, saying that defectors to the Peoples Democratic Party and other political parties from the APC, will surely regret their actions. Wamakko, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, stated this while addressing a special rally organised by his loyalists in support of President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC. He mocked the defection of Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal to the PDP, saying the state’s helmsman defected to a dead political party. Read more

Shun needless travels, NYSC DG tells corps members (Punch)

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig.Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, has charged corps members across the country to be security conscious and avoid unnecessary travels and reckless movements during their service year. He stated that whenever it was important to travel, they should obtain clearance from the appropriate authorities. Kazaure also advised them to always move in groups within the locality of their areas of primary assignments. Plateau lawmaker, NAF personnel in auto crash

A former Deputy Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Yusuf Gagdi, was on Saturday involved in an auto crash with another vehicle driven by a personnel of the Nigerian Air Force. He was said to be coming from the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, when the accident happened at about 4pm at Yingi area, along the Rayfield Road, Jos. The SUV of the legislator who presently represents Kantana constituency in the Plateau state House of Assembly was seriously damaged while he escaped with minor injuries and a bleeding mouth. Armed robbers take over Mile 2 flyovers in Lagos at nights (SUN)

Armed robbers have taken over the flyovers at Mile 2, Lagos, as no night passes without their robbing and dispossessing motorists who are held in the traffic of their valuables. The traffic snarl occasioned by indiscriminate parking of tankers and trailers along the major roads of the Apapa-Oshodi-Mile 2 corridor has made it possible for robbers to lay siege to the roads at night to rob motorists and commuters. A victim, Mr Sunday Bakare, who suffered an attack last Saturday night told Sunday Sun that he was returning to his residence in Festac around 9:30 at night on Saturday from the Maza-Maza area and as soon as he climbed the Mile 2 flyover to turn to the road going to Festac First Gate, two armed robbers attacked him on top of the flyover. At the 2016 Lagos Marathon we met with the Lagos State Governor who promised to host the African Championships. But it became obvious they were not going to host after we invited them to Durban to take the flag but they didn’t show up. We couldn’t put pressure on the governor to change his mind. “And I asked Solomon Ogba who was AFN president then what is going to happen. He told us Delta State was ready to host and even at that we didn’t want to take the championships away from Nigeria. “We didn’t have this kind of problem in previous championships. We have been to Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Marrakesh and Durban. The people there showed commitment and things went on well. AFN to bid for 2025 World Athletics Championships (ThisDay)

Following the ‘successes’ recorded at the African Athletics Championships in Asaba, strong indications emerged last night that Nigeria intends to bid for the hosting right for the World Athletics Championships to hold in 2025. The President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Ibrahim Gusau at a World press conference held yesterday in Asaba said the country is very much in strong contention to stage the games in 2025 following the gains of the African elite event which would be rounded up tomorrow in Asaba. The quest to stage the global event was fuelled by the decision of International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) President, Sebastian Coe to allow an African city to stage the event on the continent and going by the permutations, five countries including Nigeria are in the running to stage the global event. Opara makes breakthrough with Vilar de Perdizes (Nation)

Nato soldiers killed in Afghan suicide bombing (BBC)

A suicide bomber has killed three Nato foreign soldiers in an attack in eastern Afghanistan. The victims, whose nationalities have not been disclosed, were on a routine foot patrol alongside Afghan forces, Nato officials said in a statement. A US soldier and two Afghan soldiers were wounded in the attack in Charikar, the capital of Parwan province, at 6:00 local time (01:30 GMT). Taliban militants have claimed they carried out the bombing. US Army General John Nicolson said: “Their sacrifice will endure in both our hearts and history and further strengthen our resolve.” Last month, a US soldier was killed and two others wounded in an “apparent insider attack” in southern Afghanistan, Nato officials said. Venezuelan president flees assassination attempt during live TV broadcast (Metro)

Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro has survived an apparent assassination attempt in which he was targeted by drones armed with explosives while delivering a live TV address. In Sunday evening’s broadcast, Maduro can be seen giving an impassioned speech to hundreds of soldiers, before the sound of an explosion causes him and wife Cilia Flores to flinch and look up to the sky. Speaking afterwards Maduro, who was quickly ushered away by bodyguards, said: ‘This was an attempt to kill me.’ Read more

Chuckle Brothers star Barry dies at 73  (BBC)

Barry Chuckle, one half of the comedy duo the Chuckle Brothers, has died aged 73 after a short period of ill health. The entertainer, whose real name was Barry Elliott, starred in ChuckleVision with his brother Paul on the BBC between 1987 and 2009. Paul said: “I’ve not just lost my brother, I’ve lost my theatrical partner of many, many years and my very best friend.” Fans have paid tribute on Twitter, with many thanking him “for the laughs”. Earlier this year, the brothers returned to the small screen with a new show, Chuckle Time, on Channel 5. The star had not been well towards the end of the new show’s filming. Read more
