The National Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress will today (Monday) at its meeting take a final decision on the tenure of the Chief John Odigie-Oyegun-led National Working Committee. Ahead of the meeting, which from all indications will be stormy, governors and state chairmen of the party arrived in Abuja on Sunday. NEC will review the decision it took in February, when it said the tenure of the party’s officials had been extended. The tenure of Oyegun and other NWC members will come to an end on June 28, 2018. Buhari leaves for UK today, a week before Commonwealth meeting (Punch)

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Monday travel to United Kingdom. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement on Sunday described the President’s trip as an official visit. Shehu said the President would be meeting with some persons, including the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings. Buhari’s trip is however coming more than one week ahead of the CHOGM meetings billed for between April 18 and 20. Read more

Kukah backs FG’s move to grant Boko Haram amnesty (Punch)

The Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Kukah, has backed the proposal by the Federal Government to grant amnesty to repentant Boko Haram members. Kukah said there was the need for the government to accommodate the complaints of the aggrieved persons and put human face to resolving the insurgency in the North-East. The Bishop, in a chat during a Channels TV programme, ‘Hard Copy’ on Sunday, lamented that the government had reduced the fight against terrorism to only military operations and failed to address the roots of the problem. He said, “Why do we assume that security is just about guns and bullets? When Boko Haram started, I published an article titled ‘Breath not Bullets.’ I made a point that we would probably spill into a time when we would not be able to contain ourselves when those conflicts become a military operation. Dasuki sues DSS, AGF for ‘rights violation’ (Nation)

Former National Security Adviser Sambo Dasuki has sued the State Security Service (SSS), its Director General Lawal Daura and Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami over his continued detention. Dasuki has been in the custody of the SSS since December 29, 2015. The Community Court of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in a judgment delivered on October 4, 2016  declared his detention unlawful and ordered his release. In a fundamental rights enforcement suit marked filed on March 15 before the Federal High Court, Abuja, Dasuki is praying the court to order his unconditional release. He is also praying the court to award in his favour, and against the respondents, N5billion as “general damages and compensation” for the alleged violation of his rights. Read more

Offa robbery a shock, says Fed Govt (Nation)

The Federal Government has assured the citizens that those behind Thursday’s armed robbery attack and killings in Offa, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State will be arrested and prosecuted. Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed gave the assurance yesterday when he visited the Kwara State Governor Abdulfathah Ahmed at the Government House, Ilorin. Woman flees as boyfriend drowns in hotel (Punch)

A35-year-old man, identified simply as Sikiru, has drowned in the swimming pool of a hotel in the Ishashi area of Lagos State. It was gathered that Sikiru and his girlfriend had visited the hotel – Regional Hotel and Suites – on April 2 when the incident happened. The girlfriend was said to have fled the facility while the hotel manager reported the case to the police who removed the corpse and deposited it in a morgue. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, said a preliminary investigation by detectives who visited the scene showed that there was no injury on the corpse. Read more

Okada rider slumps, dies at filling station (Punch)

A man, Kehinde Akinsowon, has died after he slumped at a filling station in the Yaba area of Ondo town, Ondo State. It was gathered that the 40-year-old might have suffered from cardiac arrest. According to a source, the late Akinsowon, who was said to be a member of the executive of the association of commercial motorcyclists in the town, had ridden a motorcycle to the fuel station on Saturday to buy fuel when he suddenly fell at the station and died. The Pentagon is denying claims by Syrian state television that the United States launched missile strikes against an airbase in western Syria. Syrian state television reported late Sunday night that there were explosions heard at the T-4 airbase outside of the city of Homs and blamed the U.S. for an apparent attack.
