A 51-year-old senior lecturer at the Benue State Polytechnic, Andrew Ogbuja, has been remanded in prison custody by the Upper Area Court One sitting in Makurdi, the state capital, for allegedly raping his 13-year-old housemaid.
Ogbuja, a lecturer in the Department of Catering and Hotel Management in the school, was said to have serially raped the teenager between 2013 and 2015 when she lived with his family.
The court heard that the incident was reported to the police on August 8, 2018, by the state chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), a body made up of women lawyers.
It was gathered that one Rose Abah told the police that sometime in February 2018, the victim narrated Ogbuja had been having unlawful carnal knowledge of her when she stayed with them.
The police prosecutor further told the court that Ogbuja who is married to the victim’s cousin, as well as his son, Victor, raped her several times for the two years she lived with his family.
Ogbuja, through his counsel David Ojile, however, pleaded with the judge to grant him bail to enable him to go back home and resolve the matter amicably considering his status and also promised to take full responsibility for the treatment of the victim.
The judge who rejected the plea ordered that the suspect should be remanded at the Makurdi Federal Prison pending the determination of the matter while the case was adjourned to September 24, 2018.
