PDP calls for immediate arrest, prosecution of Adeosun (Guardian)

Nigeria opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the former minister of finance, Kemi Adeosun. Adeosun resigned her appointment on Friday, 69 days after Premium Times published a report that her National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) exemption certificate was fake. However, the PDP is not satisfied with the former minister’s resignation and has insisted on her immediate arrest and prosecution. Read more

Embattled Adeosun leaves Nigeria (DailyTrust)

Following her resignation, Nigeria’s former finance minister, Kemi Adeosun has left the country, sources close to her have said. Mrs Adeosun, finance minister since November 2015, stepped down from office on Friday after owning up to parading a forged youth service scheme certificate. President Muhammadu Buhari accepted her resignation on Friday night, some days after it was first published of how she obtained the fake document and went on to secure plush employments with it, including as head of Nigeria’s finance ministry. Buhari commiserates with U.S. Sudan over Natural Disasters (Independent)

President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his sympathies to President Donald Trump and the American people over the devastating effects of Hurricane Florence currently ravaging some parts of the United States. President Buhari made his feelings known in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Saturday. Kogi PDP: Dino, Karimi in War of Words over delegates’ list (Independent)

The Member Representing Yagba Federal Constituency of Kogi State in the National Assembly, Honourable Sunday Karimi, has accused Senator Dino Melaye of forging the original list of ad hoc delegates elected recently in Kogi West Senatorial District. Speaking to journalists in Lokoja on Saturday, Honourable Karimi lamented the efforts to manipulate the three ad hoc delegates list in the recently held ward congresses of the PDP by the Senator, said the Senator’s desperation was an exercise in futility. N4.3b pension scam: You lied, PDP tells Gov. Bello (Vanguard)

Kogi State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the claims by the state government that two former governors of the state under the party embezzled N4.3 billion pension fund, describing the allegation as baseless and an antic to hide  its maladministration. The party, in a statement by its Director of Research and Documentation, Achadu Dickson, said the Bello administration was only looking for avenue to hide its  incompetency, especially  its  inability to pay workers and pensioners. The party said on the contrary, pensioners were better off under the PDP administration in the state. Read more

Governor Rochas Anayo Okorocha of Imo State has appointed a new Secretary to the Government. He is Chief Mark Uchendu. The governor also appointed Messrs Kenneth Chid Ejiogu ADP Chief of Staff Government House, Chukwuemeka Valentine Duru, Principal Secretary to the Governor, and Mr. Victor Nwanaforo Onyechere, Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations. Okorocha also appointed Mrs. Ijeoma Igboanusi, Deputy Chief of Staff Domestic operations The governor also appointed Mr. Bonaventure Akwiwu, Mr. Sunny Chiadi. Mrs. Esther Egburuche. Osun Guber: PDP urges Buhari to unfreeze Adeleke’s account (Vanguard)

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately unfreeze the private account of the PDP governorship Candidate in the September 22, 2018 Osun election, Senator Ademola Adeleke, and those of his family members, including music star, David Adeleke (Davido). The party in a statement by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan described the freezing of the accounts as oppressive, tyrannical, provocative and a direct recipe for crisis in the state, “given that the people of Osun are solidly behind Adeleke ahead of the election.” Read more

WHO enhances HIV treatment cascade to improve interventions in S. Sudan (SUN)

The World Health Organisation (WHO) in collaboration with South Sudan’s health ministry has strengthened HIV treatment cascade to improve interventions and achieve the national 90-90-90 targets, an ambitious goal to end the pandemic. Moses Nganda, Medical Officer at WHO South Sudan, said over the last decades, Juba had continued to face humanitarian crises of varying nature and intensity weakening the health systems, And this had hindered progressive coverage of health services including HIV. Flood sacks 35 communities in 2 Edo LGs (Punch)

No fewer than 35 communities in Etsako East and Etsako Central Local Government Areas of Edo have been sacked by flood, occasioned by unending rains and overflow of the River Niger. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the flood which displaced over 30,000 people, also damaged hundreds of hectares of farmland across the two council areas. NAN reports that mostly affected by the flood are communities such as Udaba, Anegbette, Usomegbe, Uduchiz among others, all in Etsako Central Local Government. Read more

NAF troops avert fresh Boko Haram attack on soldiers in Borno (Vanguard)

The Nigerian Airforce,Saturday night,said a carefully planned major attack on troops of the Nigerian Army deployed in Operation Lafia Dole, in the North east, was foild by its Air Task Forces earlier in the day. The Air Force, in a statement by its spokesman, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said but for the quick intervention of its Air Task Force, the insurgents would have engaged the ground troops on another fierce battle. Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Abdullahi Wase, is Dead (ThisDay)

The Ambassador of Nigeria in Doha, Qatar, Ambassador Abdullahi Bawa Wase, is dead. The envoy died on Friday after a protracted illness. Wase, a non-career diplomat from Plateau State, was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2016. In a statement by the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson, Dr Tope Elias-Fatile, on Saturday Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, expressed shock over the death of the ambassador. Read more

Rwandan Opposition Leader, 2,100 Others Walk Free from Prison (VOA)

One of Rwanda’s most prominent opposition leaders walked free Saturday after the government approved the early release of more than 2,100 prisoners with little explanation. Supporters of Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza and the state-run The New Times newspaper posted photos of the opposition leader walking out of Nyarugenge prison hours after the justice ministry’s announcement. Also approved for early release was musician Kizito Mihigo, who along with Ingabire received a presidential commutation. Russia holds naval drills in Sea of Japan (Channelnewsasia)

Russian troops taking part in the country’s largest-ever war games on Saturday (Sep 15) held drills in the Sea of Japan, despite Tokyo’s concerns about a Russian military buildup in the area. The exercises were part of the Vostok-18, or East-18, war games that kicked off in eastern Russia on Sep 11 and will run until Monday. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has described the week-long operation, which involves nearly 300,000 soldiers, 36,000 vehicles, 1,000 planes and 80 warships, as Russia’s biggest-ever war games. In Sicily, Pope Francis honours ‘martyr’ priest killed by mafia

The visit is part of a campaign against organised crime

Pope Francis arrived in Sicily on Saturday to pay homage to a priest murdered by the mafia 25 years ago while trying to save youngsters in poor neighbourhoods from falling into their hands. The brief visit is part of a wider campaign he has been waging against organised crime. Before arriving in Palermo to hold a mass in honour of Father Giuseppe “Pino” Puglisi, Pope Francis stopped in Piazza Armerina, a small impoverished town in central Sicily. Read more
