The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria has filed a petition at the United Nations (UN) against President Muhammadu Buhari. In a letter to the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, the National Chairman of PDP, Uche Secondus, told the world body that Mr Buhari has a predetermined plan to use federal agencies like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the army, and the police to ‘truncate’ Nigeria’s democracy. The PDP, in the letter which is dated April 30, 2018, accused Mr Buhari of violating the Nigerian constitution and persecuting members of the opposition, as well as attacking journalists and “well-meaning” Nigerians who hold different opinions from Mr Buhari’s party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). The Emir of Mubi in Adamawa, Alhaji Abubakar Ahmadu has said that the Emirate Council and security agencies have identified the loopholes in security that that led to the recent suicide bomb blast in the town. The Emir, who disclosed this on Sunday when he received the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai in his Palace, said steps had been taken to plug the loopholes. Oluremi Tinubu, senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District on Sunday urged the Federal Government to declare public holidays for collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), ahead of the December 2018 deadline. Oluremi, in a statement in Lagos, said that the PVCs were the tools to participating in the forthcoming 2019 general elections. She also urged residents in the state to ensure that they collect their PVCs. 4 police cadets, 2 others killed on Kano-Kaduna Expressway (Vanguard)

At least six people including four police cadets have been killed in a ghastly motor accident on Kano-Kaduna Expressway on Sunday. Confirming the incident in Zaria, Kaduna State, the Unit Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Zaria, Mr Muktar Zubairu described the incident as unfortunate and pathetic. He said the accident involving two vehicles; a J5 bus with registration number: KMC 274 YW and Golf which was burnt to ashes occurred around Kwanar Likoro close to Tashar Yari. Bandits kill 45 in Kaduna (Nation)

Barely three days after Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris visited Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State over the spate of killngs, bandits at the weekend killed 45 people, including women and children. Condemning the attack, Governor Nasir El-Rufai said the Federal Government’s plan to establish an Army battalion in Birnin-Gwari would soon be implemented. Katsina Central Mosques Chief Imam dies at 95 (Punch)

The Chief Imam of the Katsina Metropolis Central Mosque, Imam Muhammad Lawal is dead. Aged 95, Lawal died on Sunday, May 6, after a protracted illness. The family spokesman, Alhaji Mohammed Ahmed, who confirmed the death to News Agency of Nigeria, said that their father died after a prolong sickness. Ahmed said that the deceased had been the chief Imam of Katsina for the past 41 years. He disclosed that the deceased left behind four wives, 27 children and several grandchildren. White House accuses China of ‘Orwellian nonsense’ over airline rules (Independent)

Egypt says there are no hidden rooms in King Tut’s Tomb after all (Time)

New radar scans have provided conclusive evidence that there are no hidden rooms inside King Tutankhamun’s burial chamber, Egypt’s antiquities ministry said Sunday, bringing a disappointing end to years of excitement over the prospect. Mostafa Waziri, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said an Italian team conducted extensive studies with ground-penetrating radar that showed the tomb did not contain any hidden, man-made blocking walls as was earlier suspected.
