Pope decries attack on Nigerian church as Christians protest killings (Punch)

Pope Francis on Sunday decried an attack on a church in Nigeria during which two priests and other worshippers were killed. Associated Press reports that the pontiff spoke on Nigeria during his remarks to the public in St. Peter’s Square. “The pontiff prayed that Nigeria’s Christian community find harmony and peace,” AP reported. The pope’s comments came just as a large number of Christians in Nigeria obeyed the call by the Christian Association of Nigeria to, after the Sunday services, protest against the killings by Fulani herdsmen in Benue State and other parts of the country. Buhari arrives Washington to hold talks with Trump, others (Nation)

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday arrived Washington DC ahead of his 4-day working visit to the United States. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the presidential aircraft carrying President Buhari and members of his entourage had left the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja on Saturday at about 11.35p.m. A Presidency twitter handle tagged; @NGRPresident, confirmed the arrival of the President in Washington on Sunday at about 4.20p.m(Nigerian time) It said “President Muhammadu Buhari arrived Washington DC ahead of his working visit to the United States. “He will meet with President Donald Trump at the White House onMonday.’’ President Muhammadu Buhari will left Abuja on Saturday on an official working visit to the United States of America, on the invitation of President Donald Trump. Police confirm explosion at residence of Ohaneze President-General (Nation)

The Police Command in Enugu State has confirmed minor explosion at the Ukehe country home of Chief Nnia Nwodo, the President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo at early hours of Sunday. A statement issued in Enugu on Sunday by the police spokesperson, DSP Ebere Amaraizu, said the Commissioner of Police in the state had already visited Ukehe in Igboetiti Local Government area of Enugu State. Amaraizu said that the command had vowed to unmask those behind the dastardly act. “Commissioner of Police, Mr Danmallam Mohammed has vowed to unmask those behind the minor explosion at the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo residence. Christian groups protest, warn President Buhari to stop killings or lose 2019 (PremiumTimes)

Christian groups on Sunday marched on the streets of Lagos, Akure, Osogbo and Ado-Ekiti to register their opposition to the recent killings in parts of the country. They also vowed to vote out the current government of President Muhammadu Buhari accusing him of failing to deal with the problem of insecurity in the country. The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Olasupo Ayokunle, on Wednesday implored all Christians to hold peaceful protests within their church premises on April 29 to protest Tuesday’s killing of two priests and 17 worshippers at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, Mbalom, Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State. Coming under the umbrella of CAN, the churches led by their clergies, said they were protesting to call the attention of the federal government to the fact that Christians would no longer tolerate the wanton killings of their fellow believers by suspected herdsmen. APC disowns online registration portal, says it’s fake (Punch)

The ruling All Progressives Congress has denounced a portal purported to belong to it and alleged to be for members’ registration. In a tweet on its official Twitter handle @OfficialAPCNg, the party warned members of the public to be wary of the said website, saying it is a scam. “The attention of @OfficialAPCNg has been drawn to a purported membership registration website, http://www.apcregistration.com. The website is unauthorised and a scam,” the tweet reads. Read more

WASSCE papers did not leak, says WAEC (Nation)

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has said none of its papers in the ongoing May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) leaked before schedule. Rather, the  Council explained that fraudulent supervisors, invigilators and candidates likely sent pictures of questions during live exams to rogue website to treat and send answers to their subscribers. The clarification was in reaction to a recent media report on examination malpractice syndicates which claimed to provide leaked question papers and answers for candidates writing the current examination. In a statement made available by the WAEC Director of Public Affairs, Mr Demianus Ojijeogu, the Council said: “The Council would like to emphasize that the question papers for  the ongoing WASSCE for School Candidates , 2018 did not leak as has been erroneously portrayed in the media. Sahara Energy boss Tope Shonubi, Dangote, others on Buhari’s entourage to U.S. (Punch)

President Muhammadu Buhari arrived Washington DC on Sunday, ahead of his three-day working visit, during which he will meet American President Donald Trump. On his entourage are Nigerian dignitaries, including top government functionaries, businessmen such as Alhaji Aliko Dangote and the Sahara Energy boss, Mr. Tope Shonubi, among others. They were with the President at Blair House in Washington where he is expected to stay while his visit lasts. Read more

Health Workers Strike: Nigerian govt, JOHESU hold crucial meeting Monday (Premiumtimes)

The federal government and the striking Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), will reconvene on Monday in a bid to find a resolution to the strike. This was indicated in a statement by the Ministry of Health on Sunday in reaction to an advert sponsored by JOHESU in the Daily Trust Newspaper of Saturday April 28. The union in the advert accused the Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, of denying the existence of an agreement between it and the Nigerian government in 2014. The ministry, in a statement signed by the Assistant Director of Information, Olajide Oshundun, said the information JOHESU gave in the advert was incorrect and misleading. Read more

Declare killer herdsmen terrorists, Kano CAN tells FG (Nation)

The Kano state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Sunday declared that the alleged herdsmen killings across the country are the handiwork of mercenaries and urged the Federal Government and security agencies to treat them as terrorists. Addressing Reporters at the Sarkin Yaki CAN secretariat in Sabon Gari, the state CAN chairman, Rev. Adeolu Samuel Adeyemo, said after due consultations and deliberations, CAN in Kano opted to go into fervent prayer session to seek divine intervention to end the killings of innocent Nigerians. According to him, “the alleged herdsmen killings are mercenaries, and therefore, we demand the Federal Government to declare and treat them as terrorists. Read more

Abia Gov’s aide escapes assassination attempt (Nation)

An aide to the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, identified as one Mr. Gibson has reportedly escaped assassination by yet-to-be identified attackers. Gibson was said to have been attacked along the Obingwa axis of New Umuahia road on his way to Aba, the commercial hub of the state. Information about the attack at the time of filing the report was sketchy, but The Nation gathered that the attackers damaged the Toyota SUV while the victim sustained minor injuries from the pieces of glass that splashed on him. Sources close to the aide said that Gibson had noticed that two men on a motorcycle were trailing him while he was driving. Read more

Unknown gunmen abduct Ekiti PDP Chieftain, demand N30m ransom (Vanguard)

Ekiti State Financial Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP), Mr. Kayode Oni, was reported to have been abducted by some unknown gunmen over the weekend. Oni was kidnapped between Efon- Erio Ekiti highway while returning to Aramoko Ekiti in Ekiti West Local Government at about 4.30pm on Saturday. The State Publicity Secretary of the Party, Mr Jackson Adebayo, who made the disclosure in Ado Ekiti on Sunday, said that Oni went to conduct the PDP Local government congress in Efon Local Government and was abducted while returning to his countryhome, Aramoko. Adebayo revealed that the kidnappers had established contact with the abductee’s wife and younger brother and demanded a sum of N30 million as ransom. Read more

Police arrest 4 suspected teenage cultists in Lagos (ThisDay)

The Lagos State Police Command, weekend, arrested four suspected teenage cultists, all secondary school students in Surulere, prompting the Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, to raise an alarm over the continued initiation of underaged boys into cultism. The four secondary schools students who were caught with some dangerous weapons, were identified as 17-year-old Femi Awoniyi, 15-year-old Dauda Sodiq, 13-year-old Ajala Hafiz and 17-year-old Temilehin Balogun. While three of the suspects were students of Atunrase Senior Secondary School, Surulere, the other suspect was a student of Birch Freeman Junior Secondary School, also in Surulere. Read more

Bike snatcher dies while escaping, 2 others arrested in Ogun (Tribune)

Two suspected motorcycle snatchers who specialised in robbing people of their motorcycle and taking such motorcycles to Benin Republic for sale has been arrested by policemen from Ogun State police Command. Also, in a related development, another bike snatcher met his Waterloo on Saturday when he fell into a ditch and hit his on a concrete culvert while trying to escape after snatching a motorcycle from its owner, whom he also shot. The arrested suspects, identified as Evans Ajaho (30) and Isaiah Aigba (21), were arrested at Baagbon village in Odeda Local Government Area of the state, following a distress call made to the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Odeda Division, CSP Mohammed Suleiman Baba that they snatched a Bajaj motorcycle at Alabata area at about 6:25 p.m on April 25. Increasing activities of Paedophiles, Sodomy worries Lagos Police Boss (ThisDay)

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, has expressed worry over the increasing spate of sodomy and activities of paedophiles. Edgal who made this disclosure while parading 22-year-old Musa Mohammed, said the suspect was caught pants down having carnal knowledge of a 12-year-old boy through the anus. He said the victim has already been taken into protective custody and was undergoing interrogation with experts proficient in the art of handling minors and infants. 2 to die by hanging for robbing woman of Bible, hymn book, cash (Nation)

An Ekiti State High Court has sentenced two men, Ariyo Ayodeji (22) and Ayodele Oluwakayode (20) to death after they were found guilty of armed robbery. They were arraigned on a four-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery contrary to Section 516 of the Criminal Code Cap C16 Laws of Ekiti State and Section 402(2) of the same law. Justice Lekan Ogunmoye of High Court 6 sentenced the two accused persons to five years imprisonment on each count of conspiracy and death by hanging on the charge of armed robbery. According to the charge sheet, the convicts at about 5.00 am on 1st March, 2016 at Plot 18 in Oke Osun area of Ikere-Ekiti, while armed with guns and other dangerous weapons robbed one Mrs. Stella Faniyi of her hand bag. CAF bans referee Ogabor over match manipulation (DailyTrust)

The Referees Committee of  the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the recommendation of  its Disciplinary Board to ban Nigeria referee,  Joseph Ogabor,  from any official mission for one year over  attempted match manipulation. A statement on CAF website on Sunday said  this was with respect to the Total CAF Confederation Cup 1/16th round first leg between Plateau United (Nigeria) and USM Alger (Algeria) played on April 7,  2018,  in Lagos. The decision follows investigations conducted and evidence submitted by the South African match officials of the  match  who were contacted by Ogabor to provide “technical assistance” to the Nigerian team. Plateau United was also  cautioned to refrain from the practice of hospitality gifts which tend to create wrong impression. Read more

True, not every joke she told got big laughs in the room. I was there and some of her material did make people uncomfortable. But political comedy, at its best, shouldn’t always be comfortable. It should make you laugh while also challenging your views. Avengers: Infinity War breaks global record on opening weekend (Skynews)

Avengers: Infinity War broke a global record with $630m (£457m) in ticket sales during its opening weekend. The figure, estimated by Disney, is despite the fact Marvel Studios’ superhero movie is yet to open in China, the world’s second-largest film market. It made $250m (£181.5m) in ticket sales during its opening weekend in the US, narrowly beating Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the highest opening weekend ever.
