Electricity distribution companies in the country have begun the mass disconnection of chronic debtors, who allegedly owe them N94bn.
The Executive Director, Association of Nigeria Electricity Distributors, Mr. Sunday Oduntan, told our correspondent on Sunday, “We started the disconnection over the weekend. Remember, we published an advert in all major newspapers asking the chronic debtors to pay their debts and we gave them 10 days’ notice.”
Oduntan noted that the operations of all the distribution companies were being hampered by the huge indebtedness on the part of consumers, including government establishments like Ministries, Agencies and Departments, as well as military and police formations.
He said, “By this time tomorrow (Monday) or Tuesday, Nigerians will see how far we have gone with that (disconnection). It is a painful thing but it is something we have to do. We have no option. We have explored all options even with the Federal Government. Read more
