Pressure mounts on PDP to sanction Sheriff, others
Some groups and individuals within the People’s Democratic Party are mounting pressure on its national leadership to impose sanctions on the former National Chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, and his followers.
Investigations by one of our correspondents in Abuja on Monday, indicated that those who wanted Sheriff and his group punished had been submitting memoranda to the leadership of the party ahead of its meeting slated for Tuesday (today). Read more
Fani-Kayode, Bode George gun for PDP chairmanship
A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, will be contesting the position of the national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, should the position be zoned to the South-West, The PUNCH has learnt.
Fani-Kayode, who was the Director of Publicity for the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation, will be competing with a former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Chief Bode George; the governorship candidate of the party in Lagos in 2015, Mr. Jimi Agbaje; and a former Minister of Education, Prof. Tunde Adeniran. Terrorism became bigger under Jonathan, Presidency replies Dasuki
The Presidency, on Monday, said terrorism became bigger while terrorists got more daring under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan due to the administration’s incompetence and misgovernance.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this while responding to a statement credited to a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), that the last administration cleared the North-East of Boko Haram terrorists to make election possible in the affected areas in 2015. Read more
2019: Jonathan, Makarfi, others vow to rebuild PDP
Members of the National Expanded Caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party met in Abuja on Monday night and vowed to rebuild the party ahead of the 2019 elections.
They said that there was the need to rebuild the party in order to accommodate those that would be joining it from other political parties. Read more

The first runner-up in the September 2016, governorship primary of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, Mr. Olusegun Abraham, has commended the ruling of the Court of Appeal which dismissed the application for stay of court proceedings filed by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
The appellate court sitting in Abuja had on Monday struck out the application for stay of court proceedings filed by the governor against his opponent at the APC primary in 2016. Read more
Fayose floats presidential campaign
The Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has abandoned his desire to seek re-election in 2018.In its place, he has launched his presidential campaign on Facebook.
Fayose had initially said he would approach the Supreme Court to determine his eligibility to run again for the office of governor of his state because of his inability to complete his first term in office. Read more

Inflation Falls for Fifth Straight Month to 16.1%
For the fifth consecutive month, the inflation rate dropped further from 16.25 per cent in May to 16.10 per cent in June 2017, indicating a 0.15 per cent points decline.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in its latest report released Monday, said the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures inflation, increased by 16.10 per cent (year-on-year). Read more
CBN Sells $195m to Banks
In continuation of its foreign exchange supply drive, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Monday intervened in the interbank segment of the market to the tune of $195million.
Figures released by the bank show that it offered the total sum of $100million to the wholesale segment, while the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) segment received the sum of $50 million. Read more
Crude Oil Price Inches up to $49 as US Drilling Declines
Crude oil price on Monday edged up to about $49 per barrel after fewer drilling rigs were added in the United States, thus easing concerns that surging shale supplies will undermine the efforts by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and non-OPEC to reduce the level of inventory in the oil market.
While the Brent crude, the global benchmark traded at $48.99 per barrel, the US crude traded at $46.57 per barrel. Read more
FG: We Can’t Allow Drones on Our Airspace Uncontrolled, Unregulated
The federal government on MOnday warned in strong terms that it would no longer tolerate a situation whereby individuals and private organisations use remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) in any part of the country to roam about its airspace uncontrolled and unregulated.

Presidency: Dasuki’s Claim on Boko Haram, Attempt to Rewrite History
The presidency on Monday dismissed claims by former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), that the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan had already cleared Boko Haram before the advent of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.
A statement by Senior Special Assistant to Buhari on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said the statement was not only untrue but also an attempt to deceive Nigerians and rewrite history. Read more
APC National Legal Adviser, Banire Raises the Alarm over Threat to Life
The National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN) has alleged receiving several threats to life messages by those he described as agents of anti-democratic forces in Lagos State.
In a statement yesterday, Banire also alleged that a rent-a-crowd rally is being organised today in Lagos by a former Chairman of Mushin Local Government and the current commissioner in Lagos State with the assistance of some elements to destroy the democratic aspirations of the people and impose candidates against the people of the state. Osinbajo: FG to Bring Down Cost of Aviation Fuel
Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday said the aviation industry would play a significant role in the economic development of Nigeria and hence, the federal government was making conscious efforts to bring down the cost of aviation in the country.

NBA president tasks lawyers on respect for seniority
President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Abubakar Mahmud, has advised lawyers in the country to respect the order of seniority at the Bar. Speaking yesterday at the inauguration of nine committees, he admonished them not to express their grievances against the leadership of the judiciary on social media platforms, but go through the appropriate channel.
He noted that the establishment of the committees was fundamental to ensuring a more active Bar, as it was not possible for the national officers or the secretariat to deal with all the activities and functions of the Bar. Read more
NDE to train 360 artisans in basic business skills
Plans are underway by the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) to train 360 artisans and petty traders in basic business under its Small Scale Enterprises (SSE) programme for operators of micro and small-scale enterprises.
Its deputy director, Information and Public Relations, Edmund Onwuliri, quoted the Director General, Ladan Mohammed, as saying that the 360 trainees were drawn from Kaduna, Kebbi, Yobe, Bauchi, Plateau, Nasarawa, Imo, Anambra, Ogun, Lagos, Cross River and Edo states. Read more
When Nigeria’s anti-graft war gets U.S. support
In the spirits of several bilateral agreements between Nigeria and the United States of America (USA) particularly the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), signed by the two countries on September 13, 1989, the American government has renewed its commitment to assisting Nigeria in the fight against corruption.

Worried that Nigerians are indirectly eating poison because of the way food production are handled, the federal government has commenced nationwide advocacy on agricultural quality control and standards.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh during the flag off of the advocacy in Abuja lamented that despite the adherence of the country to global standard for exported agricultural product, Nigeria does not have its own standard in food production. Read more

Drama ensued in a Lagos High Court, Ikeja last week after Justice Atinuke Ipaye struck out alleged USD$8.8m fraud charge filed against a British citizen, Deepak Khilnani by the Lagos State Attorney-General, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem.
Lawyers identified themselves as friends of the court protested against the discontinuous of the case of alleged $8.8m fraud filed against Khilnani.The lawyers led by Mr. Olayinka Ola-Daniels told the court that the attorney general failed to give any reasonable reason(s) why the case should not be continued. Barcelona announced Monday record income of 708m euros ($812.8m) for 2016/2017 with an after-tax profit of 18m euros.

Trump administration: Iran complying with nuclear deal
The United States said Monday that Iran is continuing to comply with the terms of the nuclear deal that curbed Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.
