Saudi Arabian moon observers said there was no sight of the Ramadan crescent on Tuesday, meaning millions of Muslims around the world will begin the holy month on Thursday. According to reports on Saudi Arabian state TV, as published by Arab News, bad weather made observation of the crescent difficult. The Kingdom and other Muslim nations like Indonesia declared Ramadan would not begin on Wednesday based on the observations by moon-sighting committees. In Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar, has advised Muslims to look out for the crescent moon on Wednesday, an indication the fasting will also start on Thursday. Muslims around the world are set to mark the month, during which believers abstain from eating, drinking and smoking from dawn until sunset. Read more

Presidency denies Nigeria’s presence at US Jerusalem embassy opening (Tribune)

The Presidency has denied that Nigeria was represented at Monday’s official opening of the United States embassy in Jerusalem, Israel. The controversial move to relocate it from Tel Aviv by the President Donald Trump administration has already drawn the ire of Palestinians who carried out a deadly protest during the ceremony thought to have been attended by Nigeria along with dozens of other nations. But a top Presidency office’s has now distanced Nigeria from the event, saying in Abuja on Tuesday that the country was not represented. The official who did not want to be named said in a statement distributed to the media: “Nigeria was not present at an event during which the United States officially relocated its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on Monday contrary to media report.” Read more

A pro-Iranian cleric who has been in Nigerian custody since 2015 after clashes between troops and his followers made a rare public appearance in court on Tuesday to face criminal charges. Ibrahim Zakzaky and his wife were brought from Nigeria’s capital of Abuja to the Kaduna State High Court to face charges including culpable homicide and unlawful assembly. It is only the second time the leader of the Shiite Muslim Islamic Movement of Nigeria has been seen in public after being taken into custody. Read more

Buhari approves N10B for Benue, others (Nation)

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved a total of N10 billion for rebuilding villages and communities including farmlands that were attacked in Benue and other affected States. New Speaker emerges in Oyo (ThisDay)

With the mourning period over for the late Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Michael Adeyemo, the lawmakers Tuesday elected a new speaker. He is Mr. Gunju Ojo, an erstwhile Labour Party lawmaker who joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) a few months ago. The 67-year-old lawmaker hails from Oriire state constituency in Ogbomoso area of the state. He was Deputy Speaker during the Lam Adesina’s administration between 1999 and 2003. In a twist of fate characterised by intrigue and high level political manoeuvring, the new speaker was until his new position the Minority Leader of the house. Police Officer killed in Bank Robery in Ekiti (ThisDay)

A police officer was reportedly killed in Ilawe Ekiti, Ekiti Southwest Local Government on Tuesday during a bank robbery operation in the town. The yet-to-be-identified policeman, according to sources, was an orderly attached to one of the council bosses in the state. A source in the town told journalists that the bandits invaded an old generation bank beside the Alawe’s palace and broke the security door with the aid of dynamite before entering the bank hall. 3 Arrested for Murder during APC Congresses (Nation)

Following the death of a voter at the local government congresses of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held last Saturday, the police in Lagos Tuesday said they have arrested three persons in connection with the crime. The suspects were alleged to have been involved in the death of one Nurudeen Lanlese at the venue of the local government congress held in Central Primary School, Agege. Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased was killed during a fracas that erupted over the non inclusion of the names of some delegates in the primaries.
