Roger Federer handed Shanghai Masters boost by David Goffin exit (Metro)

David Goffin has crashed out of the Shanghai Masters, ending his winning run of nine matches, after a surprise defeat to Gilles Simon. Fabio Fognini handed further punishment after sexist US Open outburst.

The Belgian was beaten 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 by the French ace to end what had been a fabulous recent run of form. Goffin won back-to-back titles in Shenzhen and Tokyo in the build up to the Masters 1000 event but lost in his opening match.

His exit, along with 2016 runner-up Robert Bautista Agut’s surprise defeat to Hyeon Chung is all good news for Roger Federer. The Swiss will avoid any seeded player before the semi-finals now, which is a big boost to his chances. Read more
