FRSC, best agency on road safety in Africa

In line with on-going drive by the Nigerian government to provide technical assistance for developing the capacity for entrenching sustainable road safety management in Africa, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) is considering a partnership with the Rwandan government in its desire to further entrench safer road use within the region.

Making this disclosure during an advocacy visit by the Out-going Rwanda High Commissioner to Nigeria, Joseph Habineza, the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi recalled that the agency has taken giant strides in road safety management and traffic administration through massive investment on people, process and technology, which has positively inspired and motivated other countries in West Africa and has resulted in its declaration as the best lead agency on road safety in Africa by the World Bank in 2012. Cease-Fire Between Syrian Insurgents and Lebanese Army Ends Quickly

A 24-hour cease-fire between the Syrian Islamist insurgents who seized a Lebanon border town this past weekend and the Lebanese Army forces seeking to expel them collapsed almost immediately on Tuesday, raising new alarms about the infectious spread of Syria’s civil war into Lebanon. Read more

 

China bans beards

A city in China‘s restive western region of Xinjiang has banned people with head scarves, veils and long beards from boarding buses, as the government battles unrest with a policy that critics said discriminates against Muslims.

Xinjiang, home to the Muslim Uighur people who speak a Turkic language, has been beset for years by violence that the government blames on Islamist militants or separatists. Read more

 

Nigerians flee from insurgent attacks into Chad

Some thousand people fleeing attacks by Boko Haram on the Nigerian city of Kolikolia, in Borno State, arrived last Thursday on the uninhabited island of Choua in Lake Chad. The island lies in Chadian waters about four kilometres from where the borders of Chad, Nigeria and Niger intersect.

Refugees reported that they fled violence and attacks on their village that resulted in the destruction of their houses and food reserves. Read more

Monday: The Nigeria: Our Heritage” project, an evening of entertainment centered on the centennial of Nigeria’s commonwealth, was held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall in Washington D.C.

Secure Ibori’s release – Emami tells Federal Government

A Niger Delta activist and leader of Concerned Deltans, Chief Ayirimi Emami, yesterday, said that former Governor James Ibori of the state pleaded guilty to money laundering charges at a United Kingdom Court, so that “political solution could be reached for his release.”

Chief Emami, who spoke in Warri during a peaceful protest organised by Concerned Deltans as part of activities to mark the 56th birthday anniversary of Chief Ibori, said that the Federal Government was not doing enough to secure Ibori’s release. Read more

 

Ebola scare holds plane at JFK following flight from Abu Dhabi

Tuesday evening’s program saw Erin Burnett go “OutFront” with some late breaking news, as a plane was held at JFK after a passenger started exhibiting symptoms.

During the flight from Abu Dhabi to the New York City airport, sources tell CNN an infant started coughing up blood  – prompting officials, already on high alert for any potential influx of the Ebola virus into the US — to have the baby evaluated, and the plane cleared. Read more

 

Bayelsa approves N250m for scholarship students abroad

Following complaints of unpaid allowances by students on its foreign scholarship studying in universities in Russia and Malaysia, the Bayelsa State Government has announced the release of N250 million to offset its obligations to the students.

Governor Seriake Dickson approved the money on Tuesday, according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson. Read more

 

Former Anambra deputy speaker dumps APC for PDP

Thenumber of political big wigs from rival political parties in Anambra State decamping to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has continued to swell, with the former Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Ozo Ughamadu, also joining the PDP.

At the weekend, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Environment and a member representing Njikoka/ Anaocha/Dunukofia Federal Constituency, Uche Ekwunife, found her way back into PDP and predicted that others of her ilk would soon follow suit. Read more

 

APC calls for impeachment of Elechi

The Ebonyi State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Tuesday, called for the impeachment of the state Governor, Martin Elechi, over alleged incompetence, gross misconduct, reckless borrowing, loss of focus and abysmal performance.

Briefing journalists in Abakaliki on the prolonged crisis rocking the state House of Assembly and Elechi’s performance, state Secretary of the party, Bernard Ebele, said the most eligible person to be impeached is the governor. Read more

 

Rwanda seeks direct flight to Abuja

The Federal Government of Nigeria on Tuesday pledged to improve on intra-Africa air transportation to boost trade across the continent.

The Minister of Aviation, Mr. Osita Chidoka, disclosed this in Abuja when the Rwandan Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Joe Habinaza paid him a visit. Read more

 

Jonathan to host C’wealth Games medalists, coaches

President Goodluck Jonathan will roll out the red carpet in honour of the country’s heroes and heroines and their coaches at the just-concluded 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

A statement posted by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, on his Twitter handle: @abati1990, yesterday indicated that Jonathan was looking forward to receiving the team at the Presidential Villa. Akwa Ibom community faces extinction

Despite the averred transformation by the present administration in Akwa Ibom State, some communities are still void of government presence and getting fast extinct from the surface of the earth. MKPETI Itam, a community in Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, about 15 kilometres from Uyo, the capital city, is on the verge of going extinct from the surface of the earth as no government’s impact is felt in the community even as all life-touching projects awarded either by the Federal Government or NDDC have been abandoned. Nigeria 2015: INEC to create 30,000 additional polling units

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Tuesday said an additional 30,000 polling units would be created across Nigeria ahead of the 2015 general election.

This would bring the total number of polling units in the country to 150, 000 as there are presently 120, 000 units. Read more

 

Hijacked Ship Released Near Nigeria

A hijacked Singaporean oil tanker carrying 21 sailors was released yesterday, a week after being seized by pirates in waters off Ghana in West Africa, Seoul’s foreign ministry said.

The 3,200-tons tanker, carrying a South Korean captain and chief engineer, was hijacked on July 26 off the southern coast of Ghana, the ministry added. Read more

 

Northern youths support Jonathan for 2nd term

Northern Youth Leaders and Coordinators of Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu Fans International have said they will support anybody the organisation endorses for the 2015 general elections, provided he measures up to the organisation’s rating.

This was just as the organisations promised to promote good governance, and use their membership strength of more than 3.8 million people to support President Goodluck Jonathan to win the 2015 presidential election, saying the president had shown enough democratic values in delivering the dividends of democracy. BBOG Defies Threats, Returns To Normal Venue In Abuja

In defiance of security threats to its members, the #BringBackOurGirls (BBOG) Group has returned to its normal daily sit-out sessions in Abuja in continuation of its campaign for the rescue of the   over 200 Chibok schoolgirls abducted by the Boko Haram sect.

The group, which was allegedly faced with threats of attack at its Unity Fountain daily sit-out venue and held a session at a private residence on Sunday, came out yesterday for a public sit-out and pledged to continue with the safe release of the schoolgirls, despite threats. Read more

The Federal Government on Tuesday in Abuja cautioned politicians in the country against involving security personnel in settling their personal scores.

The Federal Government said in Jalingo on Monday that it had engaged 7,000 graduates under its SURE-P Graduate Internship Scheme (GIS).

‘Nigerians will vote out PDP in 2015’

Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman Isaac Kekekeme has said the gale of impeachment targeted at opposition governors by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not stop Nigerians from rejecting the ruling party in the 2015 general elections.

He said even if President Goodluck Jonathan impeached all APC governors, he will fail to impeach the votes of the masses and members of the progressives party. Read more
