PDP calls for cancellation of Ondo governorship election

The Peoples Democratic Party has rejected the result of the Ondo State governorship election and called for its cancellation.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Dayo Adeyeye, on Monday the party said it had directed its candidate, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, and the Ondo State chapter to challenge the outcome of the election at the tribunal. Read more

EFCC arraigns Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia, Obla for bribery, unlawful enrichment

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday arraigned Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court and Chief Godwin Obla (SAN) for alleged bribery and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

The judge and the SAN were arraigned on 30 counts before Justice Hakeem Oshodi of a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja. Read more

Benin IDP camp registers 197 for NECO, GCE, NABTEB

The Uhougua Internally Displaced Persons’ Camp in Benin, Edo State, says more than 197 IDPs have been registered to write this year’s NECO, GCE and NABTEB examinations.

The Coordinator of the camp, Mr Solomon Folorunsho, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Benin. Read more

Fire disaster: YABATECH reopens tomorrow

Academic activities are to resume at the Yaba College of Technology on Tuesday, five days after they were suspended in the aftermath of a fire incident.

Dr Charles Oni, Director, Public Relations Unit of the college, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that following the resumption, semester examination would begin on Wednesday. Read more

Suspected male kidnapper nabbed in Benue

Tragedy was averted at the weekend in Benue State as a middle-aged man escaped being lynched by residents for allegedly attempting to kidnap some children.

THE Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, Monday, said the Defence Headquarters has identified lapses that have resulted to failures in the joint operations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in the prosecution of war against Boko Haram terrorists in the North East.

In what appeared like an apparent reference to the current inroads being made by Boko Haram terrorists in resisting high-powered operations of the military, resulting in deaths of some troops in recent time,Olonisakin said the development has necessitated the building of operational capacity for the Armed Forces. Read more

Crashes are caused by drivers’ negligence, not ember months — Oyeyemi

Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said in Lagos on Monday that many crashes were caused as a result of disobedience to traffic rules and regulations by road users, not the ember months. Oyeyemi made the remark during the official flag-off of the Ember months campaign of the FRSC, Lagos State Command.

Oyeyemi, who was represented by Mr Austine Aipoh, Zonal Commanding Officer, Osogbo, said that there was no supernatural thing about the ember months, saying that crashes were caused mainly by human disobedience to regulations. Read more

Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue had ordered the immediate termination of the appointment of the Executive Secretary (ES) of the Teachers Service Board (TSB), Mr James Pine, for embarrassing the state government.

Shiites don’t recognize Buhari, me as President, Governor – El-Rufai

Kaduna state Governor, Nasir El-Rufai has accused the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) also known as the Shiites Islamic sect of refusing to recognize Muhammadu Buhari as the President of the country as well as their failure to recognize him as the Governor of the state.

El-Rufai gave the statement while speaking with journalists on Sunday. He said that the group was outlawed by the state government because its leader Sheihk Ibrahim El Zakzaky and members have refused to respect constituted authorities and their activities amount to running a parallel government against the state. Read more

NAFDAC docks clearing agent over importation of fake mosquito coils

Lagos, A 38-year-old clearing agent, Yakubu Kabiru, on Monday appeared before a Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged importation of fake and unregistered insecticides.

Kabiru, who resides at Custom Quarters, Seme, was charged on three counts by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Read more

FUNAAB bursar, Ilesanmi gets N50m bail

The Bursar of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Moses Ilesanmi, has gotten bail. Justice Olatokunbo Majekodunmi of the Ogun High Court sitting in Isabo, Abeokuta, on Monday admitted Ilesanmi to a bail of N50 million with two sureties in like sum.

Ilesanmi is standing trial over alleged financial crimes. In his ruling, Majekodunmi ordered that one of the sureties must have a landed property within the jurisdiction of the court and must deposit the title documents with the court. She also ordered that the sureties must be on Grade Level 15 and above in the Ogun State Civil Service. Read more

Okorocha rural road construction begins in Imo

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, rural road rehabilitation and construction have started in the state with some communities yet to resolve their differences.

In some Local Government Areas, such as Ahiazu Mbaise and Isu LGA, work have started in those areas, while in some places one of which is Owerri West Local Government Area, political leaders were yet to resolve among themselves which of the road to commence work due to divergent interest. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to intervene in the victimisation of workers reporting cases of corruption to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, gave the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the nod to dock the erstwhile Director General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, NBC, on an amended 15-count criminal charge bordering on alleged N2.9billion fraud.

The former NBC DG is facing trial alongside the Director of Finance and Accounts, Mr. Patrick Areh, Mr. Basil Udotai and Babatunji Amure. Read more

Security guard appears in court for alleged stealing

The police in Ibadan, on Monday, arraigned a 24-year-old security guard, Benjamen Bitrus, before a Chief Magistrates’ Court, Iyaganku, on a three-count charge of conspiracy, store breaking and stealing.

Bitrus was alleged to have broken into the office and store of his employer, Forte Oil Filling Station, along Lagos/Ibadan expressway. Read more

MAN to CBN: Reduce interest rate

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) on Monday said retaining the Monitory Policy Rate (MPR) at 14 per cent by the apex bank would negate growth of manufacturing sector.

Comrade Issa Aremu, the Vice Chairman, Industrial Global Union has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to withdraw his request for 30 billion dollars loan presented to the National Assembly, stressing that “debtors don’t need new loans.”

Police storm royal palace and seize a cache of machetes, spears and petrol bombs

At least 46 members of king Charles Wesley Mumbere’s guards died fighting police and soldiers in western Uganda, a regional police spokesman said, raising an earlier estimate of the toll. Sixteen police officers also died, he added.
