Ayeni Adekunle, the CEO of Black House Media Group has become the first recipient of the Sabinews Man of the Year award. The award was presented to him at a dinner party which held at Protea Hotel, GRA, Ikeja to mark one year of Sabinews being online.
Presenting the award, Toni Kan, Managing Partner of Sabinews lauded Ayeni as one of the few people who has stood by the media outlet in the one year since the business took off.
“When we started Sabinews, we spoke to a few people who gave some directions but Ayeni took us to his office, gave us lectures, took out staff in, showed them how it’s done, and he didn’t hold back. It’s been a learning curve and it’s been easy because of Ayeni. He’s been amazing and really good to us. We thought of what we can do to say thank you, and came up with this award. Next year we hope we find someone as deserving of this award to give it to.”
In his acceptance, Ayeni encouraged the Sabinews team to keep the dream alive. “We are in an environment where a few years ago if you wanted to be a publisher, you had to own a press and a newsroom. Things are a lot easier now. For people who have a background in the media, we stand a better chance of making use of what technology provides us. I like Sabinews because you go there and you see original work, you read features, you read opinions, you read columns. I’m happy that you’re celebrating the little steps and I pray that in five, ten years, we’ll gather again to celebrate bigger steps. I’m grateful for the honour,” he said.
The dinner party was an opportunity to show appreciation to writers and friends of Sabinews. The atmosphere was convivial as conversation flowed along with the wine and food. The Sabinews new-look site was also unveiled to positive reception.
Present at the event were Mr. Azuh Arinze, publisher of Yes! International Magazine; Mr Niran Adedokun, Chairman of Sabinews; Sam Umukoro, Media Entrepreneur, journalist and Communications Manager at Coca-Cola; and Isabella Akinseye, publisher of Nolly Silverscreen.
