I’m still alive, says man with 97 wives
THE Bida man with over 90 wives, Bello Abubakar Masaba, on Sunday condemned reports making the rounds in some media that he is dead, saying “it is the work of my detractors.”
The media had rumoured that Masaba, who had worked as a teacher and Imam, died after a brief sickness in Bida, Niger State. Read more

Ex-commissioner’s son, girlfriend burnt to death in Bayelsa
Mr. Mientei Ayawei, the son of a former Bayelsa State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Chief Nimibofa Ayawei, and his girlfriend, identified only as Happiness, have been burnt to death in an apartment fire.
The incident occurred on Saturday at the NIIT area of Tombia, in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state. Read more
Police smash car-snatching syndicate, recover stolen vehicles
Men of the Abia State Police Command have smashed a car-snatching syndicate, which allegedly stole a Toyota Highlander Sports Utility Vehicle at gunpoint along Finbarrs Road in Umuahia, the state capital.
It was learnt that security operatives attached to the Umuahia Area Command, while on a patrol, got a distress call that a car had just been snatched from its owner and gave the hoodlums a chase. Read more
Tearful scenes as kidnapped Chibok girls reunited with families
The 21 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped and released by terrorist group Boko Haramwere reunited with their families amid tearful scenes on Sunday.
At a ceremony in Nigeria’s capital Abuja, parents were overcome with emotion as they laid eyes on their missing daughters for the first time in two-and-a-half years. Read more

Fitch: Weak Nigerian Economy Will Endanger Fiscal Consolidation
(Fitch) Weaker growth will make it harder to contain Nigeria’s rising debt burden, Fitch Ratings says. Fitch has substantially cut its growth forecasts for Nigeria to reflect a weak performance in 1H16 and continuing policy challenges, including implementing the new foreign-exchange regime and delays in the disbursement of the 2016 budget. We expect real GDP to contract by 1% in 2016, compared with our earlier forecast of a 1.5% expansion. We expect a limited bounce back and forecast a recovery to 2.6% next year, with downside risks if dollar liquidity remains tight. The medium-term growth outlook remains significantly lower than the 5.6% growth seen in 2010-14. Our revisions incorporate a weaker-than-anticipated first half performance. Read more
South Sudan’s ex-VP Machar is ‘broke’
South Sudan’s former Vice-President Riek Machar says he is “broke” and struggling to pay rent for the house where his family lives in Kenya, the Nairobi-based The Star newspaper reports.
His comments, in an interview with the newspaper, came after Kenyan lawmakers threatened to introduce a parliamentary motion, demanding that his family be kicked out of the country and that his assets be frozen. Read more

Germany records highest birth rate in decades
Germany has posted its highest birth rate in more than three decades, with an average of 1.5 births per woman recorded in 2015, data released by the country’s Federal Statistics showed on Monday.
The Statistics Office said in a statement that there was an increase of 27 births per 1,000 women in 2015, taking the overall birth rate from 1.47 in 2014 to 1.5 in 2015.
