Sam Smith: Sex change shock-star ‘questions his gender’

Sam Smith has openly admitted to considering a sex change as he came to terms with his own identity.

The Grammy winner, 26, sat down with actress and activist Jameela Jamil in the extremely candid interview where he confessed that a battle between his body and mind made him sometimes “think like a woman”.

The Latch hitmaker, who came out gay aged ten, said that he now identifies as non-binary classing himself as ‘neither male or female’.

Sam, who is about to embark on a short tour in South Africa, also opened up about battling with his weight growing up, revealing that he had liposuction at 12-years-old.

The singer explained to Jameela in her new ‘I Weigh’ Instagram TV series: “I’ve always had a bit of a war in my body and my mind… I do think like a woman in my head at times.

“I’ve sometimes sat there and questioned, do I want a sex change? It’s something I still think about, but I don’t think it is,” he confessed.

He said that doing research led to an epiphany: “When I saw the word non-binary and gender queer and read into it and heard these people speaking I thought ‘f*** that is me’.”

Explaining what it meant for him, Sam said: “You do not identify in a gender. You are just you. You are a mixture of all things. You are your own special creation. That is how I take it.

“I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between – it’s all on a spectrum.”

He then continued: “I think the same about sexuality. I’ve been with too many straight men to know that not everyone who is straight is fully straight.

“You fall in love with people, not genitals.

“I’ve tried to change that into my thoughts on gender… when I move, when I have sex with men, it’s very feminine. I’m feminine in many ways – and I’ve always resented that.”

Back in 2015 Sam made headlines when he dropped a staggering four stone in a matter of months revealing a new trim figure thanks to a healthy diet while on tour.

But speaking with Jameela, Sam admitted that since not touring and over Christmas he has turned back to bad habits and began putting weight back on.

However, instead of feeling down about it Sam said he wanted to take action, seeking out positive movements like the ‘I Weigh’ campaign and changing his social media habits.

He told The Good Place actress: “I do want to help other people, but you can only do that by helping yourself first. I want to speak out about body issues and weight in men.

“It’s the basis of all my sadness. Literally everything I’ve ever been sad about is my weight and I struggle with it every day.”
