Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger feels it makes no sense for the Barclays Premier League season to kick off this weekend, with players still fatigued from the World Cup.
Triumphant Germany trio Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski have all only just returned to the Gunners’ Hertfordshire training base and will not feature in Saturday’s season opener against Crystal Palace or, in all likelihood, Tuesday’s Champions League play-off first leg at Beskitas. Maigari returns, says crisis in football over
A new vista was opened in the unending crisis in Nigeria Football Federation as Aminu Maigari returned to claim his seat following a closed door meeting with Minister and Chairman, National Sports Commission, Tammy Danagogo.
A letter from world football ruling body FIFA on Thursday restored Maigari and directed restoration of status quo in NFF leadership until the August 26 elective congress. But the Mike Umeh led executive Committee insisted that the letter did not restore him, saying that he has since resigned. Read more
USA Basketball cancels first African visit
The largest recorded outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa has forced USA Basketball to cancel its scheduled trip to Senegal later this month before the FIBA World Cup.
USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo told ESPN.com on Friday that the recent declaration of a “public health emergency of international concern” in the region by the World Health Organization left no alternative for USAB. Read more
