Oga DNA, come and be going.
DNA has been on several lips in the last couple of weeks and has also trended heavily on social media. Three small letters that have caused wahala, katakata and gbege of unimaginable proportions. Oga DNA, your wahala haff become too much? You have turned peaceful homes into killing fields, betrayed love and created massive distrust. You alone! Abeg molecular scientists come and carry this your baby that is shaking table anyhow!
Deoxyribonucleic acid often referred to as DNA, is a complex molecule that contains all of the information necessary to create an organism. It also serves as the primary unit of heredity in organisms of all types so, whenever organisms reproduce, a portion of their DNA is passed along to their offspring. This issue of heredity is what has often put DNA in the public domain.
From time back , things have been happening. No wonder most traditional societies boldly declare that only the woman knows the father of her baby. So naturally, men have been fostering, providing care and bringing up children without asking too many questions. After all the ‘whole world’ saw wifey pregnant and the oga at the top provided every support both in the course of the pregnancy and at delivery. So why won’t the child be oga’s own? In addition too, most cultures also have the belief that every child birthed in a home belongs to the man of the house…no questions expected and none asked.
In stepped DNA testing and everything changed. No longer was the woman the only one who knew the father of her child, scientists could tell.
Secrecy was broken and the fights began. As technology continues to make DNA easy to assess, the fight has gotten messier and more deadly. DNA paternity testing is the use of DNA profiling to discover or prove who is the biological parent of a child. It is currently the most advanced and accurate technology to determine parentage. A paternity test establishes genetic proof as to whether a man is the biological father of an individual, and a maternity test establishes whether a woman is the biological mother of an individual.#
The test is performed by collecting buccal cells found on the inside of a person’s cheek using a buccal swab. These swabs have wooden or plastic stick handles with a cotton on synthetic tip. The collector rubs the inside of a person’s cheek to collect as many buccal cells as possible. The buccal cells are then sent to a laboratory for testing. For paternity testing, samples from the alleged father and child would be needed.
So you see , DNA testing has opened the Pandora’s box and the attendant fallouts have included murders and suicide.
What is Pandora’s box? In classical mythology, a box was given by Zeus (the biggest of the Greek gods) to Pandora with strict instructions that it should not be opened. Pandora’s curiosity soon got the better of her, and she opened the box. All the evils and miseries of the world flew out to afflict mankind.
So if you are contemplating a DNA testing, think properly …it is not moimoi oh and the table you are shaking can fall with you standing on it. Remember madam Pandora and her box !
