A 32-year-old Ugandan student, Lulu Jemimah, has succumbed to the pressures from her parents to get married by marrying herself in a mock wedding ceremony.
Jemimah, an Oxford student, who tweeted about her wedding, said she had been under serious pressure from her parents who had been on her neck to settle with a good man and on her 32nd birthday, decided to do the unthinkable by getting wedded to herself in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, on her visit to her country.
According to Jemimah, marriage is the last thing on her mind as she is studying for her Masters degree Creative Writing at the Oxford University in the United Kingdom but her parents had never given her peace and to mock them, she decided to throw the surprise mock wedding.
On the wedding day which held in a pub in the capital city, Jemimah said she got dressed in a wedding gown and went to the pub in a taxi and wedded herself.
She later tweeted about the event with the words:
“Officially married. There was no groom. One bride, one goal. Hopefully, I can now focus on the #MStCreativeWritingOxford #Masters @UniofOxford”
Lulu said that her wedding cost her just £2 which was the fare for her taxi to the venue, and she got other things free of charge from friends. Her friends also contributed financially to make the ‘wedding’ a success.
She also wrote:
“I have a strong passion in life and I am committed to achieving my goals at becoming an academic. But all my family wanted to ask me was when I planned to get married, which is very important back in Uganda, followed by when I would be having children and starting a family.
My father wrote my wedding speech when I turned 16. Every birthday, my mother prayed for me and in recent years, this has included a plea for a good husband. But I just didn’t want to think about walking up the aisle. It’s not the thing which keeps me up at night.”
The new bride, through the help of some of her friends, celebrated her birthday and her ‘self’ wedding at the same time.
“One of my closest friends, Karin, reminded me that I had a lot to celebrate this year like getting into Oxford and I joked that I would show up in a wedding dress.”
Jemimah also said that although her parents were absent at her ‘big day’, as they were ‘a bit confused’ about her decision to get married to herself.
“When we talked the next day, my mother was a bit confused and slightly hurt, but I explained that by even wearing a wedding dress, it proved I was ready for marriage. My father still maintains that he doesn’t know what to say.”
The self-wedding, however, is legally binding in Uganda but for Jemimah, it seems to have fulfilled that aspect of her life and she is now focused on her studies.
