Senate urges Buhari to Probe SURE-P

George Oji Senate yesterday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately put a machinery in motion to probe every penny spent on the Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme, SURE-P, and other poverty alleviation programmes of the past administration.

The Senate also turned down the request by some Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, senators to compel the President to commence the payment of monthly N5,000 stipends to unemployed youths in the country in line with his campaign promises.

The resolution to probe the SURE-P programme, which was adopted amidst dissenting voices from the opposition PDP senators, was sequel to an additional prayer moved by Senator Babajide Omoworare to Senator Bassey Albert Akpan-sponsored motion on the “Urgent Need to Curb the Soaring Rate of Unemployment in Nigeria.” Read more
