Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, stormed the the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, office with anti-snake venom and snake charmers to recover a missing N36m allegedly stolen from the board’s vault by a mysterious snake. This is following the recent startling report of a missing N36 million in JAMB vault, purportedly swallowed by a spiritual snake as confessed by an official of JAMB, Philomena Chieshe, who, failing to account for the N36m she made from the sale of JAMB scratch cards, accused her housemaid of conniving with another JAMB official, Joan Asen, to “spiritually” steal the money from the vault in the accounts office through a spiritual snake. Boko Haram membership thinning out ―President Buhari (Tribune)

President Muhammadu Buhari says the era of Boko Haram terrorism is gradually drawing to end, with the narrowing of the recruitment base of the insurgents, and renewed onslaught by the Nigerian Army. The President stated this when he received the Letter of Credence of Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See to Nigeria, Most Rev. Archbishop Antonio Guido Filipazzi, at the State House, Abuja on Tuesday. Buhari noted that the terrorist group had lost appeal in its initial strongholds, necessitating a steady retreat that would eventually culminate in ending the insurgency. Read more

Osinbajo in Kogi for Economic Summit (SUN)

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is now currently in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, for the first Economy/Infrastructure Summit being organised by the state government. Osinbajo arrived Lokoja in a helicopter, which landed at Army Record barrack, Lokoja, at about 11.15 am. He was received by Governor Yahaya Bello of the state. APC crisis: Buhari meets Tinubu in Aso Rock (Tribune)

National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and former Interim National Chairman of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, were at the presidential villa, Abuja on Tuesday for a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari ostensibly over the crisis in the ruling party. Both men arrived at about 3.03pm and were expected to meet with the president at his official residence. When approached by correspondents before the meeting, he had declined to speak, but only saying, “when I come back.” Read more

Ajimobi charges judiciary on quick dispensation of Justice (Leadership)

Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi yesterday swore in the pioneer President of the state’s Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Solomon Akinteye, with a charge on the judiciary to speed up the process of dispensing justice to decongest the courts.  Speaking at the ceremony held at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office, Ibadan, Ajimobi urged Akinteye to immediately generate new rules of practice and procedures towards enhancing speedy delivery of justice.  In another ceremony, the governor also administered the oath of office on the new Head of Service, Mrs. Olawumi Ogunesan, charging her to join hands with his administration to enhance the ongoing reform of the civil service. Fayose to amend anti-grazing law to protect Herdsmen in Ekiti (Independent)

Ayo Fayose, Governor of Ekiti State has said that the State ‘s Anti-Grazing would be amended to protect herdsmen from undue assault from members of the public. Fayose hinted this during a visit to Ipao-Ekiti in the wake of the killing of a farmer by suspected herdsmen. It was also learnt that some herdsmen lost their cattle in the community to the crisis. Ambode approves legislation to boost power by 4,000M (DailyTimes)

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has assented to the State Electric Power Reform Bill into law. The law is specifically designed to generate at least 4, 000 megawatts of electricity under an embedded power initiative. The governor also signed six other bills into laws namely: the Amended Land Use Charge Bill, School of Nursing Bill, Cooperative College Bill, Cancer Research Institute bill, Amended Customary Court Bill, and the Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Bill. NBS: 3.45 million Nigerians metered (DailyTimes)

As of Q4 2017, only 46.16% equivalent to 3.45 million consumers of the total 7.48 million power consumers in Nigeria were metered, according to a power sector report compiled by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The NBS report, Power Sector Report: Energy Generated and Sent Out and Consumed and Load Allocation, metering data indicates that the DisCo with the highest percentage of customer metered, with 69.49% recorded, was Benin DisCo. In the second position is Eko DisCo with 60.73%, followed by Ikeja DisCo with 55.95%. Read more

Buratai tasks graduating NATRAC soldiers on professionalism (Tribune)

Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Yusuf Buratai, on Monday, charged soldiers training young officers of 76 regular intake NATRAC to demonstrate a high sense of professional conduct while discharging their constitutional responsibilities. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Buratai was speaking at the graduating ceremony of 2,723 soldiers at the Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC), Kontagora, on Monday. Represented by Gen. Mohammed Garba, Commander Artillery, 311 Corps, he said that training undertaken by NATRAC is one of the several measures being taken to adequately prepare troops of the Nigerian Army to be capable of performing their duties effectively. FG sets up 15-man committee on irregular migration, human trafficking (Guardian)

The Federal Government has inaugurated a 15-man committee to address the issues of irregular migration and human trafficking in the country. The committee is headed by the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Mr Mohammed Babandede, and the Edo Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Yinka Omoregbe, as Alternate Chairman. The Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, who inaugurated the committee in Abuja on Tuesday said the committee was set up to provide possible solutions to issues of irregular migration nad human trafficking in the country. Innoson files motion stay execution bench warrant (NewTelegraph)

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Innoson Nigeria Ltd, Dr. Innocent Chukwuma, has asked Justice Mojisola Dada of a Lagos High Court in Ikeja to stay the execution of a bench warrant issued against him last Friday over his failure to show up in court to answer to a forgery charge slammed on him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The businessman wants the court to stay the execution of the arrest warrant pending the determination of an appeal he lodged against the order. Justice Dada had, while issuing the warrant, ordered that the Innoson boss should be arrested and kept in custody a day before March 14, the next adjourned date, for probable arraignment over the alleged offence. Absence of Judge stalls final forfeiture of judgement of Allison Madueke’s penthouses (Tribune)

The absence of Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of a Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday stalled EFCC’s suit seeking the final forfeiture of two penthouse structures, allegedly linked to a former Minister of Petroleum, Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke. The suit was adjourned till February 14 Justice Olatoregun is said to be attending a workshop. Recall that Olatoregun had on Dec. 5, 2017, ordered an interim forfeiture of the said properties, after an exparte (without notice) application, was argued by The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Malabu Oil Scam: Court adjourns matter until April 23 (Independent)

The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday adjourned all three suit relating to the alleged Malabu Oil I.1 million US dollars until April 23. In one of the suits, the prosecution had filed an oral application seeking a leave to file a written motion to withdraw charges against some of the defendants. In the other second leg of the suit, four out of the 10 defendants had filed notices of preliminary objections on the charges leveled against them. The judge, Justice John Tsoho, who eventually consolidated the motions, held that the court required quality time to peruse through the issues raised in order to deliver a water tight ruling on them. Alleged N11bn fraud: Court to hear case against Shema, 3 others on April 10 (DailyTrust)

A Katsina State High Court on Tuesday fixed April 10, 11 and 12, 2018, to hear the motion filed by the EFCC against ex-governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema and three others on alleged financial impropriety.

Other defendants in the case are former Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Sani Makana, and former Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Lawal Rufai as well as ex-ALGON Chairman, Lawal Dankaba. The Katsina State Government and EFCC filed the case before the court accusing Shema and the three others of misappropriating N11 billion state funds. Read more

Scientist grow human kidney on stem cells (NewTelegraph)

Scientists at the University of Manchester yesterday said they have successfully produced human kidney tissue within a living organism, which was able to produce urine, a first for medical science. According to the findings of a new study published in the journal, ‘Stem Cell Reports,’ after three months, an examination of the tissue revealed that nephrons; the microscopic structural and functional units of the kidney had formed. The study showed that the new structures contained most of the constituent parts present in human nephrons, including proximal tubules, distal tubules, Bowman’s capsule and Loop of Henle. Similarly, tiny human blood vessels, known as capillaries, had developed inside the experimental mice, which nourished the new kidney structures. Read more

ITTF confirms Quadri, Oshonaike for Top 16 Cup (Punch)

African champion Aruna Quadri will be leading a four-man Nigerian squad  to the International Table Tennis Federation  Africa Top 16 Cup holding in Nairobi, Kenya in March. The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, in a statement on Monday, said the ITTF had  confirmed the country’s participation in the competition. The News Agency of Nigeria  reports that the ITTF Africa Top 16 Cup will hold from March 1 to  3 in Nairobi.
