SEPLAT SAFE MOTHERHOOD PROGRAMME RETURNS TO EDO AND DELTA STATE

SEPLAT Petroleum Development Company Plc has flagged off this year’s edition of its annual Safe Motherhood Programme.

The programme was formally declared open on Wednesday November 12, 2014 at the Sapele Central Hospital coinciding with the United Nations designated, World Pneumonia Day.

The Safe Motherhood Programme is one of the Company’s health based Corporate Social Investment programmes which was launched in 2011 and runs in the company’s contiguous host and impact communities in Delta and Edo states.

Every year, the programme impacts the lives of pregnant women in over 60 communities where women receive prenatal care and medical counselling as well as over 3,500 pregnancy kit bags and insecticide treated nets to ensure safety of expectant mother and unborn child are distributed.

This year’s programme is focusing on Pneumonia and deworming of children under5 years old.

All the children born by women who benefited from the Safe Motherhood programmes, as well as, other children have a good cause to rejoice.

A statement from the company’s General Manager, External Affairs and Communications, Dr. Chioma Nwachukwu reiterates “Safety is our first core value which is why we are committed to promoting safe delivery for expectant mothers and safety for children in order to help curb their mortality in our host communities. This year we are providing vaccinations and deworming children. The good news is Pneumonia is preventable and treatable which is why we are supporting our host communities to fight this disease by providing vaccination to children under 5 years old in our communities. We are happy to also add that we are carrying out deworming exercises to help eradicate worm infestation in the children.”

SEPLAT, in order to achieve its aims and ensure maximum positive impact, has scheduled to provide this programme at eleven centres located in its areas of operation over the next two weeks.

The Safe Motherhood Programme launched in 2011 has received local and international applause with many acknowledging SEPLAT’s contribution to reducing infant and Maternal Mortality in their host and impact communities.
