The match was embroiled with controversy after Williams was penalised on three occasions by match referee Carlos Ramos. Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou was adjudged to have coached the American star from the stands.
Serena Williams then received a point penalty for smashing her racket and then a game penalty for calling Ramos “a thief” for his decision.
The game penalty meant Osaka went 5-3 ahead in the second set and she served out to win her first Grand Slam title after earlier winning the opening set 6-2.
