Seun Kuti Slams People Who Wants to Take Advantage of His Father’s Name

It is no longer news that yesterday marked the posthumous 80th birthday celebration of the prominent Nigerian iconic singer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. He would eternally be remembered for his confrontational personality, direct lyricism and unapologetic lashing of the political leaders at the time and as the father of Afrobeat.

One of his sons, Seun Kuti would take to his social media account and sing the eulogy of his father, he recounted the battles his father faced and shared in the agony of his father’s demise. Furthermore, Seun sarcastically called out several musicians by throwing shades at that. The saxophonist and singer warned them not take advantage of his father’s ideologies because they are merely ‘pretenders‘ ‘wannabes’ or ‘fakers’ simply because they want to smoke marijuana and sleep with women.

He said:

People will never understand you without going through the education you have tried to promote. Every Tom Dick And Ashy is the new Fela just because they want to smoke igbo and chase women. How about the sacrifice? How about duty? They want to be Fela and at the same time be the darlings of all the oppressors.

All these new Fela’s and those possessed by his sprit hob nobbing with white supremacists. They think u are great because rappers mention your name, they don’t know that rappers mention ur name so they can feel greatness. What do they know about sacrifice? What do they know about the trauma that first hand violence has inflicted on our family? The blind leading the blind listening to the deaf speak! Happy 80th. The struggle intensifies!!!’

It is apparent that he is discussing about the nonchalance of recent musicians towards the affair of the economy and the society. Fela was renowned for seeking justice and was a prominent human right activist, he even formed a political party known as Movement of The People (MOP) in 1979 and volunteered for the role of Presidency during the 2nd republic in Nigeria but he was however denied the opportunity due to his infamous attribution.

Seun is agitating the new generation of musicians to stand up and fight rather than remain lukewarm and get consumed by the materialism of life. He does not want stars to keep affiliating with the ‘Fela’ brand with their music yet they haven’t sacrificed anything. It is impossible to want to be a maverick like the legendary singer and be friends with the authoritarians and leaders of the society, the theme of Fela’s music was primarily about justice, the promotion of black power and the continuous fight for equality between the rich and the poor.

In recent times, the singers and celebrities tend to infatuate more about wealth acquisition. We hope they get it aright someday.
