Members of the Shi’ite movement of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) were reported to have clashed with some soldiers on Sunday at Zuba, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and five persons were feared dead.
The Shi’ites were in a procession from Suleja, Niger state, to Abuja for a three-day mass protest.
Members of the religious movement were said to have approached a military checkpoint near Zuma motor park when the soldiers ordered them to turn back while barricading the road.
The Shi’ites disobeyed the instructions as they reportedly engaged the soldiers in an argument which degenerated into a chaotic scene.
A witness told our source the Shi’ites resorted to stoning the soldiers who retaliated by opening fire in the process.
Abdullahi Musa, the IMN spokesperson, alleged that the military took three corpses to Zuba police station, adding that the movement is in the possession of the remaining two bodies.
“I want to assure you that we are not disturbed with this onslaught. The more they kill us, the more people are coming out to protest,” Musa said.
