The 13-time Champions League winners, Real Madrid, had a disappointingly worrying loss against CSKA in Moscow on Tuesday evening in a game where they hit the woodwork three times. It could have been an easy win on another night but things were not meant to be.
The men from Madrid are now in need of a very convincing win in their next league match due to their stuttering form of late.
Here are three pointers from the match against CSKA:
Isco is the fulcrum of the team.
The playmaker’s absence was so conspicuous with the limited number of chances created by Real Madrid.
The possession stats were in the favour but there wasn’t enough penetration which means teams find it easier to defend against them in Isco’s absence.
Odriozola is one for the future.
The young defender was a bright spot in an otherwise dim performance. He ensured the injury to veteran right back, Carvajal, was easily mitigated.
Odriozola also completed a nice interception on what would’ve been a huge chance for CSKA to score. Depending on the extent of Carvajal’s calf injury, Odriozola proved that he is ready to be his backup.
A must-win game beckons on Saturday against Alaves.
The Basque team has been in very good form this season and Los Blancos needs to bounce back with a convincing victory to allay fears of the supporters.
Real Madrid is on a three-game winless streak which needs to end soon even with a number of key players out due to injury.
