Properties worth millions of naira were razed down in about fourteen shops in Akure, the Ondo state capital on Tuesday and some of the local traders and owners of the shop wept openly counting their losses.
The early morning fire which was said to have been noticed at about 2 am razed the shops located along roadblock junction opposite Chicken Republic eatery.
The fire which also spread to other locked stores was said to have been caused by a power surge.
Residents in the area were said to have mobilized trying to put out the fire hours after it started but a lot of damage was said to have been done even before the arrival of men of the state fire service.
Lots of goods and properties worth millions of naira inside the shops were lost in the process. They were said to be part of the goods already purchased to be sold during the Chrismas and New Year festivities.
