The Federal Government will soon begin to monitor posts on social media by notable Nigerians in order to checkmate hate speeches. Defence Minister Mansur Dan-Ali disclosed this to State House reporters on Thursday after a meeting President Muhammadu Buhari held with security chiefs at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Read more

Mining: Fed Govt to spend N20b on exploration (Nation)

The Federal Government plans to spend N20b more on data exploration, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development Dr Kayode Fayemi has said. The money, he said would employed to further generate information on other aspects of exploration which has been a major challenge in the sector. He also revealed that the government has paid for and retrieved arial survey that was conducted years ago, but was not paid for by previous governments, that can now be used by mining investors. The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), on Thursday insisted that his predecessor, Mr. Mohammed Adoke (SAN), must face trial for alleged crimes bordering on the $1.1bn Malabu transaction preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has commenced direct labour works along Abuja-Keffi road. Managing Director of the agency, Engr. The All Progressives Congress (APC) panel on restructuring has recommended devolution of power to states and the scrapping of local governments as a tier of government. It recommended resource control, state police, independent candidacy and merger of states. Suspected herdsmen kill police officer, one other in Benue (Punch)

Two persons including a policeman have been killed by suspected herdsmen in the troubled Guma local government area of Benue State. Guma and Logo council areas had been under severe attacks of herdsmen since the new year. The incident was said to have occurred between Wednesday and early hour of Thursday. Read more

NSCDC arrests man, 56, over diversion of prepaid metres (DailyTrust)

The Nasarawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) yesterday paraded a 56-year-old man for alleged diversion of eight electricity prepaid metres belonging to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC). The state Commandant of the NSCDC, Muhammed Mahmoud Fari, said “On 22 January 2018 following complaints by customers, the command arrested Abiola Fasunle Musibau for diversion of eight prepaid electricity metres allocated to houses in Mararaba area of Karu LGA.” Read more

Police kick as Evans files N200m suit over seized trucks (Nation)

Suspected millionaire kidnapper, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike (alias Evans), has urged the Federal High Court in Lagos to order the release of his seized 25 Mack trucks. Through his lawyer Olukoya Ogungbeje, Evans said the trucks were seized without a court order. The lawyer said the police forcefully confiscated the trucks from Evans last June 15 without any court order. Read more

Teenagers, 11 others nabbed over rape, robbery in Gombe (DailyTrust)

The Gombe State Police Command has arrested two teenagers for allegedly defiling an under-aged daughter of their neighbour. The command’s spokesperson, DSP Obed Mary Malum, said the duo of Bashir Muhammed, 15 and Abdulmalik Abdullahi, 15, of London Maidorowa quarters were arrested alongside 11 other suspects in connection with rape, armed robbery and vandalizing electricity cables in the state. The Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami (SAN) gave reasons yesterday why a Federal High Court in Abuja should not allow his predecessor’s case, challenging a pending charge against those linked with the alleged $1.1bn Malabu Oil scam. One of Malami’s predecessors, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), named with some others in a charge filed by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is challenging his inclusion as defendant in the charge. Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered a former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Olisa Metuh, to attend court on February 5 or be arrested and returned to prison. Justice Abang gave the order yesterday whiling on two applications. One by Metuh’s lawyer, Okezie Ikpeazu (SAN), for adjournment on health ground and the other by prosecution lawyern Sylvanus Tahir, seeking the revocation of Metuh’s bail for allegedly being absent in court for not cogent reasons. President Muhamamdu Buhari on Thursday met behind closed doors with the nation’s security chiefs as part of efforts aimed at ending the spate of insecurity across the country. Equities lose N156b as selloff worsens (Nation)

The profit-taking trend at the Nigerian stock market entered the fourth consecutive trading session yesterday as increased open order for sale shaved off N156 billion from the market value of quoted equities. The All Share Index (ASI)- the benchmark index at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), declined by 0.99 per cent from its opening index of 43,963.40 points to close at 43,529.06 points. Read more
