Nigeria’s minister of health has refused to criticise the country’s president’s preference for seeking medical attention in the United Kingdom. President Buhari returned from London Friday after a three-day medical trip. His media aide Garba Shehu said the latest visit was at the behest of his doctors whom he saw during a “technical stopover” on his way from Washington. “In the course of the technical stop-over for aircraft maintenance in London on his way back from Washington last week, the President had a meeting with his doctor,” Shehu said. “The doctor requested the President to return for a meeting which he agreed to do.” Read more

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), said on Friday that it would not allow the government of President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to fool Nigerians by trying to sidestep the promises they made during the 2015 campaigns. The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, said in Abuja on Friday that the PDP had uncovered attempts by the ruling party and the government to play on the intelligence of Nigerians through a recent statement issued by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina. Adesina, in the statement titled “Beware of Fake Statements Ascribed to President Buhari,” claimed that some statements credited to the president on social media were false. Read more

Okorocha commends Oyegun for cancelling Imo APC LG congresses (Vanguard)

The Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has commended the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun for cancelling the conduct of the Local Government Congresses of the Party in the State, which should have, under normal scenario, taken place today. Odigie-Oyegun, on Friday confirmed the postponement of the today’s Imo local government congress just as the state secretariat of the APC was set ablaze by unknown persons. Kaduna poll: Voters hail use of electronic voting machine (Punch)

Voters in Rigasa area of Igabi Local Government of Kaduna State have hailed the use of the electronic voting system in the ongoing local government election in the state. Those who voted told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday that the process was easier and faster. NAN reports that verification of voters began at about 9:00am at the two polling units in LGEA Rigasa Primary School, Lokoja road, where voters cast their vote immediately after verification. NAN also reports that election results were printed out to show the electorate that there were no record of votes before the exercise. Read more

30 prisoners await execution in Anambra (SUN)

Thirty out of the 1,761 prison inmates in the four Prisons in Anambra state have been condemned to death and waiting execution. Also 1,574 inmates out of the same number were currently awaiting trial for various offences, a figure that constitutes 78 per cent of the total inmates in the state prisons. Disclosing this to newsmen yesterday in Awka, the Controller, Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS), Mr. Emmanuel Nwakaeze, said 48 of the awaiting trial inmates were female. The Controller said the 30 were condemned to death since he assumed office in Anambra Command. According to Nwakaeze, Onitsha Prison has the highest number of inmates 887, followed by Awka with 374 inmates; Nnewi 282 and then Aguata with 218 inmates. Read more

Patience Jonathan’s associate, Esther Oba asks court to set side forfeiture of $8.4m, N9.2bn to FG (Vanguard)

An associate of the former First lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, Esther Oba, has asked a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, to set aside an earlier order of interim forfeiture of the sum of $8.435,789.84 million and N9.185, 327, 362 billion allegedly linked to Mrs Jonathan to the Federal Government. Trial judge, Justice Cecilia Mojisola Olatoregun, had on April 19, 2018 granted order of interim forfeiture of the monies following an exparte application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, against Mrs. Jonathan, Esther Oba and some companies. Companies joined in the suit are Globus Integrated Service Limited, Finchley Top Homes Limited, AM-PM Global Network Limited, Pagmat Oil and Gas Limited, and Magel Resort Limited. Read more

38 Ships expected at Apapa, Tin Can Ports (ThisDay)

Thirty eight ships laden with petroleum products, food items and other goods are expected to arrive Apapa and Tin Can Island Ports in Lagos between May 11 and May 26. The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) stated this in its publication, `Shipping Position,’ a copy of which was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday. NAN reports that a total of 10 of the expected 38 ships would sail in with petrol. NPA said the remaining 28 ships contained buckwheat, fertiliser, bulk gypsum, bulk sugar, steel, pet coke, base oil, frozen fish, empty containers, general cargo and containers laden with goods. Hoodlums arrested at Ekiti APC primary (Punch)

Some hoodlums were arrested at the gate of the venue of the Ekiti APC primary rerun for attempting to force themselves into the venue and for aggressively confronting policemen who manned the gates. One of the suspected hoodlums, who accused the policemen of bias after he was denied access into the venue because he did not have the necessary requirements, had on him charm wrapped in a red piece of cloth. A team of suspected hoodlums comprising of four men was also arrested and handed over to Criminal Investigation Department present at the venue. Read more

Kenyan wins Okpekpe International 10km Road Race (Nation)

Under heavy rains, Kenyan athletes on Saturday won the first, second and third positions at the 6th Okpekpe International 10km Road Race at Okpekpe in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo. Alex Kibet won the race in 29.47seconds to claim the 20,000 dollars prize money. Simon Cheprat came second, returning in 30.29 seconds for the 13,000 dollars cash prize, while Ronoh Kiplagat was third with a time of 30.39 seconds and received  9,000 dollars. Oshiomhole, Obaseki, Dalung defy rain to run in Okpekpe (Nation)

Participants in the 2018 edition of the annual 10 kilometres Okpekpe road race on Saturday defy the heavy downpour to run in the race. The rain began ten minutes after the VIPs race kicked off. Among dignitaries in the VIPs were former Governor Adams Oshiomhole, Governor Godwin Obaseki, Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, Edo Deputy Governor, Hon Philip Shaibu, Edo First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, former Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Clem Agba amongst others. Foreign athletes including their Nigeria counterpart had earlier began their race 20 minutes before the rain began. Governor Obaseki and Oshiomhole completed the race despite the rain. It was a day of glory for athletes from Kenyans as they won in the male categories while an Ethiopian, Yani Dera Dida won in the female categories. Read more

U.S. fighter jets intercept Russian bombers in international airspace off Alaska (Reuters)

Two U.S. fighter jets intercepted two Russian bombers in international airspace off the coast of Alaska on Friday. The Russian TU-95 “Bear” bombers flew into a so-called Air Defense Identification Zone located about 200 miles off Alaska’s west coast, at about 10 a.m. EST (1400 GMT), North American Aerospace Defense Command spokesman Canadian Army Major Andrew Hennessy said in a statement to CNN. Two Alaska-based NORAD F-22 fighter jets intercepted and visually identified the Russian bombers until they left the identification zone and the Russian aircraft never entered U.S. airspace, CNN reported, citing the statement. Donald Trump’s chief of staff has said the president is “embarrassed” by the Russia investigation and must explain away the probe when he meets world leaders.  In a rare on-the-record interview, John Kelly also revealed his “great frustration” at times in the job and said illegal migrants are not “bad people”.  The comments could further raise tensions between Mr Trump and Mr Kelly, whose attempt to bring order to the White House and authoritative tone are said to have grated on the president. Iraq tightens noose on Baghdadi after aide’s arrest (Aawsat)

Iraq announced on Friday arresting five top ISIS leaders, one of which suspected to be one of ISIS-founder Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s aides.
