Nelson Mandela’s ex-wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, has died at the age of 81, according to her family and personal assistant. Madikizela-Mandela, known to many in South Africa as “The Mother of the Nation,” had been ill for a number of years and was most recently admitted to the hospital for a kidney infection. Her personal assistant‚ Zodwa Zwane‚ first confirmed Madikizela-Mandela’s death on Monday afternoon. “It is with profound sadness that we inform the public that Mrs Winnie Madikizela-Mandela passed away at the Netcare Milpark Hospital‚ Johannesburg‚ South Africa on Monday April 2‚ 2018,” Madikizela-Mandela’s family said in a statement. “She died after a long illness‚ for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year. She succumbed peacefully in the early hours of Monday afternoon surrounded by her family and loved ones.” Read more

Lagos residents battle health problems over emissions (Punch)

The residents of Jerico Police Barracks and Oto community, in the Ijora Olopa area of Lagos State, say they risk dying from different health challenges due to toxic fumes they inhale from the plant of an asphalt producing firm in the neighbourhood, Righteous Construction Company Nigeria Limited. They lamented that the fumes escaped into their apartments and made them to suffer from cough, chest pain, skin rashes, and eye problem, among others. 15 kill, 55 persons injured in fresh Boko Haram attack in Maiduguri (Nation)

No fewer than 15 persons are feared  dead and  55 others sustained injuries in a Sunday night attack by Boko Haram insurgents at Bale community in the outskirts of Maiduguri. The News Agency of Nigeria  (NAN) reports that echoes from sporadic gunshots and multiple explosions which lasted for hours on Sunday evening, were heard from the  outskirts of the city. Competent security sources told NAN that a number of insurgents attacked Bale-Shuwa and Bale-Kura communities near Maiduguri in an attempt to infiltrate the town at about 8: 00 p. m. Baby snatched by monkey found dead (Punch)

Indian police say a 16-day-old baby boy believed to have been snatched by a monkey has been found drowned in a well. The infant was sleeping under a mosquito net at his home in the eastern state of Odisha on Friday when he was taken by a rhesus macaque, a species with a reddish-pink face common across India. “The mother is saying that she saw a monkey take away her child.
