Against All Odds, art exhibition of Zinno Orara, one of Nigeria’s most celebrated painters opened at Mydrim Gallery, Ikoyi, Lagos on Friday, December 5, 2014.
The exhibition which features a range of paintings created over a ten year period is dedicated to his wife Adaora-Zinno Orara who is currently battling breast cancer.
“There were times I was working in tears,” Zinno said, “but the good thing is that as an artist I work a lot and because of that I had a number of works down. Half of the works are old works but the other half are new. It’s been a very difficult time.”
From the artist who believes ‘art is a calling and cannot be run away from even if one tries,’ Against All Odds features pieces like ‘Unforgettable Memories’, an aerial painting of Auchi town where Zinno Orara stayed for some years, ‘Tender Gender’ and ‘In Daddy’s Shoes.’
Speaking with Chris Ihidero at the opening, he shared his thoughts on the exhibition. “I think it’s a fantastic collection and it’s a very touching collection. If one takes a glance around all the painting being displayed here, there are certain themes that you can read through and it’s between beauty and what happens to beauty.”
Azuh Arinze, publisher of Yes Magazine hailed the artist as ‘exceptional’. “He has some emotional works, particularly those he made specifically for his wife. While he was taking me around you could see the emotions as he spoke. Beyond the work, I’ve come to join him in praying for divine intervention.”
The exhibition continues till Friday December 12, 2014.
